Freeman: No Cumberbatch interaction

Martin Freeman has revealed that he didn't prepare his Hobbit scenes with Benedict Cumberbatch, before they started filming.

The Sherlock stars didn't even get the opportunity to interact together as they shot a key scene in the Hobbit sequel, The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug.

"Now I think, we probably should have rehearsed that together. We weren't even on the same landmass at the time so you can't really rehearse," Martin said.

" When we came back for the second or third series of Sherlock, he would be saying, 'I've got to go back and do more bits of Smaug'. So we knew what we were up to obviously but never in concert with each other."

Martin, who has reprised his role of Bilbo Baggins opposite Benedict as the dragon Smaug and the Necromancer in the second instalment of Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy, admitted acting with green screen was challenging.

"It was kind of odd, it was quite strange. He wasn't there so there is no dragon to act with or act opposite, so you rely on your imagination a lot," he said.

"It's a very technical way of doing it so within that, you're always trying to keep some soul in there and keep some sort of acting chops going on, while you're going, 'Hang on, where do I look now?' So it's that balance."

Martin, who portrays Doctor John Watson in BBC show Sherlock, has been keeping tight-lipped over the Sherlock storylines.

"I'm sure he's the same but you just don't say anything. You just say nothing because you know ultimately people don't want to hear it because they'd much rather discover it. It's just more fun than if I tell and blow it for everyone," he said.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug is in cinemas now.
