Cumming : Straight role like drag
Alan Cumming has revealed getting into character as Eli Gold for The Good Wife feels like putting on drag for him.
The flamboyant Scottish actor - who plays a gay drag queen in his new film Any Day Now - has played straight, controlling spin doctor Eli in the award-winning US political drama for five years.
Alan revealed: "I don't think Eli Gold has become part of me, I think he would hate me. I'm not sure I like him that much!
"Eli is like a drag queen for me. It's like putting on drag when I get dressed up as him. My hair gets made up into a sort of helmet and the whole aesthetic and his clenching of the buttocks is a sort of anti-drag.
"When I get in the costume and look at myself in the mirror, I think, 'who are you?'."
In Any Day Now, Alan stars opposite Garret Dillahunt, who plays his on-screen partner in the seventies set story of two men fighting for their right to adopt a son.
Alan revealed: "We met at a wig fitting, three days before filming started, and I felt so comfortable.
"I guess with these sorts of films you don't get much rehearsal and it's quite quick, you have to fling yourself into it. But he is such an easy evolved straight man.
"If I was doing a sex scene with a girl I would have been like, 'I'm going to put my hand on your boob. Let's tongue each other now.' Which is technical and polite but with us, we never even discussed it. We just said, 'Let's just do it'."
