Justin Bieber's mum has said she would love to be with her son all the time to help "ground him".
The 19-year-old pop sensation has had his share of headlines in recent months, after being late for a concert, apparently losing his temper with a photographer and losing his pet monkey after failing to produce the required vaccination and import papers after arriving in Germany on tour.
His mother Pattie Mallette said that although she would like to help Justin with any problems, she also realises he needs to make his own choices sometimes.
She said: "You have to sort of let them make some of their own decisions.
"Me, personally, I would love to be with him all the time and to be able to ground him and deal with his problems and do all of that stuff, but at some point the parenting style changes.
"I hope to still be a respected voice in his ear."
Pattie said she speaks to her famous son regularly, but that he prefers she not speak publicly about any controversies.
"He wants me to continue to respect his boundaries and my relationship with him," she said.
"Everybody has their own opinion and everybody wants to sensationalise everything."
Meanwhile, Pattie - who had a troubled childhood and became pregnant with Justin aged 17 - is due to unveil a new teen edition of her memoir, Nowhere But Up. The book includes advice, statistics and hotline numbers for young people on depression, pregnancy, bullying and unwanted sexual advances.
