Tweddle leads with 'gorgeous' dance
Olympic gymnast Beth Tweddle and her partner Dan Whiston topped the Dancing On Ice scoreboard after delivering a "gorgeous" performance.
The remaining contestants faced the challenge of incorporating a 30-second solo into their dance - and Beth did so with style and ease.
Scoring 30.5 points out of 40, the sportswoman impressed all four judges with Ashley Roberts describing the dance as "gorgeous", adding: "I can't wait to see what happens in the future." Controversial judge Jason Gardiner said: "It was really so feminine and tender. I loved watching you." Afterwards her delighted partner Dan said he felt that Beth had "blossomed".
Coronation Street star Samia Ghadie and her partner Sylvain Longchambon scored a disappointing 18 after their boogie to a Little Mix song failed to impress the judges. Jason described it - the lowest scoring dance of the night - as "uninspired", adding: "We can now see that you are very much reliant upon Sylvain." Samia's reaction to the judges' comments was one of acceptance as opposed to disappointment. "To be fair I don't think they were that harsh because I was really, really nervous," she said.
Comedian Joe Pasquale and his partner Vicky Ogden also scored 18 after their dance to Hippy Hippy Shake, but head judge Robin Cousins said it was "almost a hippy hippy replacement". He added: "Every time you go out there every ounce of determination is in full view." Jason echoed those sentiments to an extent when he said: "You do give us something to laugh at." However, he also said it was "just nowhere near where it needs to be".
Television presenter Keith Chegwin and his partner Olga Sharutenko were thrilled with their score of 21 and they both enjoyed praise from the judges. Karen Barber described Keith as "one of our better skaters out there", while Robin said: "More importantly as the man you lead your partner." Jason said: "You as a performer? Endearing."
Former X Factor winner Shayne Ward and his partner Maria Filippov danced to Tom Jones's Mama Told Me Not To Come and were given 23.5 out of a possible 40. Robin told Shayne he was "almost more comfortable" on his own on the ice than when he was dancing with his partner. Former Pussycat Doll Ashley was tickled pink by Shayne's fetching costume. "I never thought I'd be turned on by a man in a pink bedazzled shirt but I think that might have happened tonight," she said.
EastEnders actor Matt Lapinskas and his partner Brianne Delcourt scored 28 and were commended on putting on a performance that was "unlike anything we've ever seen on the show", according to Jason. Dressed as an evil swan, complete with black shiny feathers, Matt was told his performance was "amazing". Ashley said: "Oh drama baby, yeah! I was amazed and you give me goosebumps."
Olympic boxer Luke Campbell and his partner scored Jenna Smith 23.5 and received positive comments from the judges. "That smile can melt anybody's heart," said Karen. Jason told the gold medallist that he was "developing" but added he needed "more grandeur".
Former rugby star Gareth Thomas and his partner Robin Johnstone scored 27.5 and Jason told Gareth he "oozed lots of sex appeal". Robin described his performance as "smooth".
