Connolly knock shows up lack of depth

Alan Pardew’s need for another striker in the January transfer window has been highlighted again by the news that David Connolly is a doubt for tomorrow’s FA Cup third round clash with Luton.

The Saints boss has admitted that he is after a couple of new signings in the window, as well as looking to extend the loans of Neal Trotman and Michail Antonio.

One of those will surely be a striker as he tries to find ample cover for Connolly and strike partner Rickie Lambert.

Pardew may have liked to have given Lambert a rare rest for tomorrow’s game against the non-league Blue Square Premier side but that will not be an option if Connolly is sidelined.

Full story in today’s Southern Daily Echo.

The last thing we'd want is to see is Rickie or David injured.

I'm so thankful that at least our club is right the right shape to afford to attract and buy players.

It was always going to happen, even more so since they lost their manager. A new manager will want to look at all options available. I thought he was class but seemed to be getting a lot of stick on here of late? Hopefully the new manager will come in, not play him enough and we can buy him at the end of the season. He must have enjoyed his time here? And if he doesn't get picked there then surely he will push for a move?

He was one of pearsons signings actually, he signed him on loan from Stoke... his greatest skill is standing idle.

Firstly Happy new year to everyone! Hope Paterson will get on the bench tomorrow, a great prospect who only needs more games to make his mark.
Think we have to get more defenders in before strikers - scoring goals has not been a problem! As for Pericard, would be a step backwards imo.

We failed to get a win in our first seven matches. So in the eighth game Saga finally gets a start. Surprise, surprise we win, Saga winning a pen. AP, being a bright chap fails to learn that simple lesson and drops him again. Surprise, surprise we lose again.
Saga doesn't play again until he comes on as sub when we are 2.0 down to Torquay, Surprise, surprise he creates both goals in a 2.2 comeback.
We don't need more strikers, we need a manager who learns simple lessons.

Invicta Saint, Rochester says...

At the risk of being controversial, I think Saganowski should play against Luton if Connolly is unfit. Before the vitriol is unleashed, I reason as follows. He recently scored twice for the reserves against Swansea reserves. Cynics might say that Swansea are allegedly the favourites to sign him and he wanted to impress? If we assume that he actually wants to get away to play first-team football elsewhere, then a good performance against Luton would help his case. I accept that Luton may not be world-class opposition, but they have suffered like Saints at the hands of the football league and their current status in the Conference is artificial. A difficult match is in prospect tomorrow and may be Saga could do us and himself a big favour?

ap073, southampton says...
4:14pm Fri 1 Jan 10

Wise words.Saga has actually scored 4 in his last 3 reserve matches. Not really the sign of a man who isn't trying.

Condor Man, Southampton says...
4:36pm Fri 1 Jan 10

Saga will sit out the remaining 6 months of his contract so if needed best to give him a game. Unlike Rasiak he's been unable to attract interest from other clubs so he'll have to sit and wait. He'll probably end up back in Poland next season if no Championship club wants him as some money will be better than no money

solent_saint_matt, Southampton says...
4:56pm Fri 1 Jan 10

I don't agree with the thought of saga playing tomorrow against luton. He burnt his bridges at the beginning of the season when he thought he was too good for this league. He hasn't had a good game for saints since the championship playoff semi-finals against derby when he was on loan. He only plays well when he is trying to earn something and AP won't give him the satisfaction of playing for saints first team again. He will rot in the reserves until his contract is up, there are other strikers we could bring in that are way above what saga offers the team.

ourkid1984, Thornhill, Southampton says...

Lallanna can play upfront, especially against a team like Luton. No disrespect to them but if a top league 1 attacking, scoring midfielder can't play upfront against Luton then why are we where we are in the league?

We do also have Paterson who have showed that he can perform against lower opposition. Don't you people think this is the Echo trying to create transfer stories out of nothing?

A forward is the only position I thought that we don't really need just yet. A couple of defenders is the priority.

allsaintsnocurves, Southampton says...
6:01pm Fri 1 Jan 10

Well there seems to be a debate here about who to play upfront for Saints tomorrow...personall
y I would play Waigo and Patterson. I think Patterson deserves a chance. I would like to see Martin play in defence as well.

My team to:

Davis (to come back in just for this game)
James
Perry
Martin
Harding
Hammond
Wotton
Gobern
Antonio
Waigo
Patterson

bench - Ricky, Lallana, Jaidi etc.
It's a mixture of young and experienced and you would hope good enough to see off Luton.

I'll go with that other than putting Thomas at RB and rest James

A CM.....a RB.....and a striker! Saint Ricky needs to be rested from time to time like any other player, or come off the bench for a semi-game. Besides - every opposing manager is going to have him closely marked when he starts. AP knows what he is doing - trust him. Also 'appy new year all! We are under a foot of snow here, looking forward to the Luton game.

Interesting comments about Saga. For those who are calling for him to rot in the reserves - wake up. All the time he is contracted to Saints we are paying him above average wages for League 1 so AP should make use of him. I hope to god Pericard does not come back here. He is up there with Ali Dia.

HNY to all on the South coast and to all Saints fans everywhere else around the world. I think if AP really thought a great deal about Trottman he would have signed him, Trottman disappointed me too often, when he could have cemented his place alongside Jaidi.
As for Connolly being injured; it really isn't a massive problem because we still have the overpaid Saganowski we can play. He seems to be banging a few in for the reserves. AP is going to have to find some forgiveness in his heart for a player that has been sent to Coventry for long enough and who has hopefully learnt his lesson that this club is not beneath him.
I agree with a lot of the posts that we do still need to sign a new spine, but in all 3 positions I would like to see physical players as we have enough flare players to blend with.
COYR 3-1 again please, although a clean sheet would be fantastic.
