Hartlepool 1, Saints 3 - as it happened

Click here to make this page automatically refresh (2 mins)

ADAM Lallana struck twice to give Saints a 3-1 victory at Hartlepool tonight.

The result ended a run of three league games without a win for Alan Pardew's men.

Saints fell behind to Andy Monkhouse's header, but they were level by half-time as Rickie Lambert played in Lallana for his first.

The midfielder then scored a brilliant goal after the break, before a horrific error from Hartlepool keeper Scott Flinders gifted Lambert the third.

The only sour note for Saints was Kelvin Davis having to go off with an injury.

All the action as it happened can be found below.

Key incidents

FULL TIME: That's it, the referee brings the match to an end. Important win for Saints at a very tough place to go.

90 mins: Well, it's six minutes of added time.

84 mins: It's all happening now. A crunching tackle on Adam Lallana sparks a melee. Hartlepool's Ritchie Jones is sent off for a second booking. Paul Wotton also receives yellow, along with Lloyd James and Neal Trotman.

83 mins, GOAL 1-3: Oh dear. Comedy stuff from Scott Flinders in the Hartlepool goal and he gifts it straight to Rickie Lambert, who makes it 3-1. That really should be it.

81 mins: David Connolly's night is over. He's replaced by Michail Antonio.

68 mins: Paul Wotton introduced for Morgan Schneiderlin, who was booked for dissent earlier in the second half.

61 mins: A blow for Saints. Davis has picked up an injury and has to be replaced by Bartosz Bialkowski.

59 mins: Kelvin Davis makes a brilliant save at close range from Sam Collins' header.

53 mins, GOAL 1-2: It's that man Lallana again. A wonderful strike right into the top corner from 20 yards to give Saints the lead.

46 mins: The second half is underway. No changes from either side at the break.

HALF-TIME: Saints survive some late pressure to go into the break level, at 1-1.

30 mins, GOAL 1-1: Rickie Lambert plays in Adam Lallana and the midfielder equalises for Saints. Ten for the season in all competitions now for Lallana.

21 mins: Andy Monkhouse gets a sight of goal again, but his weak shot is easy for Kelvin Davis.

16 mins, GOAL 1-0: The hosts take the lead, as James Brown's cross is headed in by Andy Monkhouse.

0 mins: We're underway at Victoria Park.

I've just returned home after visiting my old home town of Southampton, where I watched the last 3 games. Horrified to see we've reverted to the style at the end of last season. Even at home we don't use the flanks - there must be a lesson for Pardew here. Visiting teams are ripping us apart by using wing play together with crosses from the by-line. (We used to call this football!). Visiting teams also know where to expect kicks from our goalkeeper, i. e. down the right side. They pack this area and win almost every ball. The left side of the pitch is unpopulated, except by the opposition. Sadly, almost every time Lallana gets the ball, the move breaks down. He never uses the opportunity to get down the wing even when it's clear. All he does is turn inside and either make a poor pass, or take an ineffectual shot from long range. He gets goals because he gets good service, which makes him look far better than he really is. Ricky Lambert must be so frustrated at the lack of service. He's a proper centre-forward, and needs proper crosses back to him from the by-line.
We are playing like relegation candidates again. The one bright spot of the last 3 matches is the return of Graeme Murty. His experience shines through like a beacon.
I fear for our future.

The weather tonight is bound to play a part, we must try to keep the ball on the ground and deliver nice clean passes. I can think of easier places to go to on a night like tonight, this is not an easy one by any means. Got to respect the fans travelling to Victoria Park to-night, hope we can scrap a win...make the journeyhome a happy one...COYS!!!!TOP10F

Its almost time when the whistle shall blow.
And Saints come out running, clearly ready to go.

They are head and shoulders above their north eastern opponents.
Lets hope that we have managed to aquire all the components.

Needed to kill the game off with clinical precision.
And not rely purely on a referees decision.

This is a game that we can clearly win.
To lose this would be nothing short of a sin.

Forget about the past, this is a winnable match.
With our defence and KD finally coming up to scratch.

Does anyone else not think we get the rub of the green from refs this year! Todays game, we have conceded 11 fouls to there 3. Was at the game on Saturday and the ref was very quick to run up and have words with Saints playes whilst i dont think he had one word with one of there players. Have noticed it a fair few times this season!

Niemi would be a good appointment, not only as cover but as a coach in the future. A world class leader/keeper that would scare our defence into performing in front of him.

Well we are back to where we were roughly before the Brighton game. This was always going to be tough and I admit I thought a draw tonight. Well chuffed with the result. Now we have to follow up with making the easy games easy and not complicating them and then we are away from the bottom four.
They gave us a hard game but we stuck in there. A win was a bonus here, considering their recent form.
Now we have two teams around us and unlike Brighton we need to go out with the right attitude. Both won tonight. The pressure is not on us, it is on those above and you can hear their knees knocking. The Saints are coming.

Great comeback in difficult conditions tonight. I was getting a bit worried at h/time with us drawing and both Wycombe and Tranmere winning!! 1-3 again at Northampton on Saturday? COYR

great result tonight in dire conditions. Lallana is starting to show us his true potential and ability. Those that wanted Bart to get a go in goal have their wish if he starts making mistakes in goal I hope everyone calling for KD to make way realises what a good keeper he is. Though I think Bart is a good back-up but thats all he is back-up. I think AP should rest as many players as poss for Northampton and play some of the back-up players so they can show us what they can do mellis, papa, mills, holmes, molyneux, perry, even patterson maybe. I think players like Lambert, Jaidi and even Trotman need a rest.

Tony I've teased the heck out of Adam over recent weeks but you cannot argue that the experts and the fans at games are heaping praise on him and fully expect him to get premiership offers in January.

I wanted him to take opportunities.. he's done it this week.. good on him. I would prefer him central.

Apart from Brighton the last three games were not rele candidates.

Yes there is loads of work to be done on defence, yes running forwards are turning us inside out but why should anyone fear for the future? Pards said that in his last game review and laughed because he he favours attacking football rather than closing down.
Our future is shining and things are well in hand under Pards & Co.

Hoping so Dan once she gets sorted.
What a game though, seems as thought they had more possession, especially in first half, but it isn't how much possession you have. it is what you do with it, as we have found to our cost at times.

lol.. it was me that said he needed to get in front of a barn door and practise hitting it.. it was the case in the last several games he had been missing to many gimmes. Nothing wrong with a gee up, target practise is part of training.
Anyway all in fun and he heard me.. haha look at the result.. he hit the barn door 2 out 3 and only just missed with the third.
