Lambert to go head-to-head with former team mate

RICKIE Lambert and Grant Holt will be on opposite sides this weekend, but it wasn’t too long ago they were fighting for the same cause.

That is something Eastleigh defender Warren Goodhind remembers well.

Goodhind was a member of the 2005/06 Rochdale team, which boasted a fearsome attacking partnership of Lambert and Holt.

The pair’s time together was short-lived, but proved extremely fruitful.

Holt departed for Nottingham Forest in January 2006, while Lambert left the League Two club for Bristol Rovers in the summer.

But Holt, now at Norwich, who visit St Mary’s on Saturday, banged in 15 league and cup goals that season before he got his move.

Lambert finished the term with 22.

Goodhind, who signed for Rochdale from Cambridge United in September 2005, got a first-hand glimpse of what each player was capable of.

“Both of them were fantastic lads, they were really good people,” he said.

“When I first signed at the end of September, I went straight into the team and the first four or five games I played we were averaging three or four goals a game.

“They were banging them in left, right and centre.

“You knew if you got a ball into them it would stick.

“They wouldn’t lose it and you knew they would create something from it.

“Rickie was lethal from set pieces – he had a tremendous shot, an absolute thunderbolt.

“They just seemed to click together, which was brilliant for us.”

They'll run it at us to turn our guys but they won't be able to much as they'll be pinned in their own box by our back to life midfield while Rickie and Davie take turns banging them in the net.

How many fans are coming down... should be loads... they have had a lot of 24-25k gates this year.. more than Ellen Rd. Lets hope they bring the Pies.... with Delia Smith as major shareholder at Norwich she could bake you a few great big crusty meaty delights. Maybe some with puffy pastry halos on top.

Norwich like us score in every game this is a tough one.. If we play our best we should be able to tear them apart. If we lose concentration early we'll fall apart and will be unlikely to get back into the game.. Our guys will know it and will be playing at another level... Saints to win in a heart stopper!!

Another thread put in to make it look like there's some news.

If Holt is that good, why not wait until January and then buy him. I don't suppose he would want to come here if Norwich were looking good for promotion.. but if Saints keep up momentum and are mid table by January he might think about it.

Then chuck Delia a few hundred thousand and also buy a few hundred of her Christmas cook books (to hand out free to Saints fans) and the deal would be done !! Let's be having you !!

I think at the moment the Echo is struggling to find news on Saints. You can't write if there is nothing to write about.
You notice very little is coming from the club this week and the players. One would say the riot act has truely been read and a few backsides kicked. As they should be, Sunday was complacent and showed that we still lack consistency. Yes we are getting better, but we have to close the oppositions game down, until we do it, we won't reach the play offs.because we will give games away like we did at the weekend. We cannot afford those mistakes against Norwich. We need a result against the in form team of the division.
We have achieved alot already this season, after losing the whole fabric of the club and almost the club itself.
Play offs is a major ask, but we believe, simply because we have faith in the team. Consistency is the key, it will make or undo us. COYR

Robbie quick ad a flash pulls her knickers down and bangs her senseless from behind ! when finished he turns to the pompey fan and says "your turn " the pompey fan starts to cry "whats wrong?" says Robbie. Pompey fan sobs "my head wont fit in the railings"

Thanks Harley... I think I saw 7-5 Saints online but based on the form of the last 3 games gaining 4 points from a poss 9pts I'd say keep the money in your pocket. The fact is that teams are watching the videos of how to run around our backs and it's up to Pards and Dean Wilkins to sort it.. or this season will derail. Most of us saw this coming weeks ago while some were baying for millions to be spent on strikers we don't need. Pace and grit at the back is urgently required or don't take Jaidi so far forward because he can't get back.

Serious serious stuff this week
on track or pack for someone.

What can we do at the back with the guys we have now... Visiting teams will know how to play against our 451 ... is it time to change it a bit.. keep the backs back and let the flanks do the work?
This variation has set piece options and impact on the bench to go up a notch when needed. James and Hammond will hold the mid Adam will get up with Rickie and get some in. Lee isn't quick but he distributes well and can drop back to help.

Disagree with most of this post. I was one of the ones "baying for millions to be spent on strikers we don't need" as you put it, and I think you'll soon change your tune if Connelly (who is returning to fitness after 18 months out) gets injured at all - who's left then to partner/replace Lambert? We definitely need another striker.

And just because some of us were calling for another striker this did not mean we didn't recognise the need to sort out the defence - no clean sheets in 10 games or so - doesn't take a genius to work out there are defensive issues.

I also don't think that visiting teams will know how to play our 4-5-1 now because our 4-5-1 is not predictable, it's often 4-3-3 in attack and can be fluid - in fact more fluid than a 4-4-2 in some cases.

Finally, there's obviously a reason that AP isn't playing Holmes (although I don't really get it as I think he's got a lot to offer), so I probably wouldn't start him (nor Antonion who seems better as an impact sub).

They're all just opinions though at the end of the day, and everyone's got one.

Not sure how to call tomorrow. If saints start as slow as they did against Brighton than we will be in major trouble.Cannot play the long ball game as i dont believe that Connely is big enough against central defenders.Build it from the back and let the team work together.Norwich are a good side and we need to rspect them but we can beat anyone in this league and might as well forget about last Sunday and continue the way we are going. The defence will have to work 110 % and the midfield helping them.Rickie will want to show he is the best striker in the division so fingers crossed.Up the Saints and down the Skates.

4 from 9 pts using both systems so far.. the teams scoring against us are running the ball at our backs, turning them and getting in behind and goals are coming. The only ones not being turned are Hards and Trots though two goals came from errors by the oft impetuous Trots from mem. They do have the measure of our back line set up.

Don't get me wrong I like 451 and got slammed early when I said so and the fans went nuts about playing it at home being cowardise.. lots have changed tune when they see 451 switch fluidly to 433.

I watched Lee in the reserve game highlights several times.. he just seems to make time to put the ball where he wants it unlike any in the current first team starters.. unlikely he'll get on..agreed but it should be tried soon.. at the mo Fish seems more in favour off the bench and he seems all dash and bluster. Lee would add accuracy to set pieces and we might start scoring from corners.

What we we do with an expensive striker at the moment, put him in the reserves with Saga and Pats?
We have Connolly Lambert Waigo and Lallana capable of coping until the window or can use Saga who is working hard to find form.

when we get rid of some more of our non wage earners then yep we'll get a few new stars in.

Just opinion, all balls or not I do think if we play the same every week we'll get found out and take a hammering... hope it's not this week. Can you see that the fear in the oppositions faded away after Orient took the game to us... we must win it back.

Though enjoying a rant about tactics and schemes... it is genuine for fun interest.. I do have absolute faith in the man with the tiller in his hand.
