Captain Davis 'sorry' for sacked Wotte

SAINTS captain Kelvin Davis admitted he “felt sorry” for Mark Wotte after hearing the news of the Dutchman’s sacking.

The 32-year-old keeper celebrated his new three-year contract at St Mary’s on the same day manager Wotte had his terminated.

Speaking to the Daily Echo last night, Davis said: “My first thought is that I feel sorry for the guy.

“He did the best he could while he was in charge.

“If things could have gone a little bit better for us, we could have quite easily stayed in the league last year and then we would probably be in a different position.

“I feel for him, but the new owners are putting their stamp on the club and on the team and I think that this must be a part of their grand plan to make Southampton Football Club better.”

Whewnever someopne is made redundant everyone expresses sympathy. Thats life. Wotte is to be praised for holding things together in recent weeks but the new owners have ambition and that will involve recruiting someone who can truly take this club back up two divisions. Won't be an easy choice.

let's face it, he was a cheap replacement of a cheap replacement; his record was terrible, he had enough chance to try and save us...he didn't he, unfortunatley got what he deserved and thankfully it was swift, much faster than we've been before, exactly what we need....sorry, but that's the reality of the situation.

For the first time in years it seems our club is going to be moving in the right direction.
It's not going to be easy,we all know that
and feeling sorry for Wotte is a human
emotion,but come on
Kelvin,sorry's not
going to get us promotion life's hard
football's hard and
Wotte just wasn't up
to it,better he's gone,think our future's looking so
good now,if Wotte had been left in charge don't think we'd really be feeling that sure.
Good move by our new owner. Thanks.

These people clearly intend to run the club efficiently and are not afraid to make difficult decisions if they feel it would benefit the club. What we need to do is get behind these decisions and not winge and whine if we disagree. When the new manager is announced, on past form, this website will be awash with people moaning it isn't someone different. I hope those people who wanted us to into administration have enjoyed the last few months, because I have been a nervous wreck. Whatever happens now we should be thankful that we have a club to support and support is exactly what the club needs at the moment.

I commend Wotte for everything he has done in the past 3 months. His demeanour has been thoroughly dignified at a time when everything else at SFC was a soap opera. Seeing one person who still had class made things a little easier. HOWEVER, i will be honest in saying that i did not think he was the man for the job, i certainly could not see us in the premier league in 5?? years time with Wotte picking the team.

Unfortunately, this is life. the swiss could have not given him a contract at all, which would've meant he worked free for three weeks then got shown the door, at least this way he walks away with a YEAR's salary. My employers can dump me however they want for a years wages upfront!!

On another note, Wotte would have made himself a lot more employable by the way he has conducted himself re cently. Good luck to him. Now get me strachan please. thanks.

This summer there's gonna be a record number of out of contract players. The right manager could tempt ex prem players to drop 2 divs. Blend these with the youth we already have and we'll have a winning side. Imagine the damage someone like Kevin Phillips could do in L1.

The best way for Mr Liebherr to get a return on his investment is to get a top quality manager in and invest in the squad. That way, we can expect to back in the premier league in 2 to 3 years. Does anybody honestly think that was going to happen with Wotte in charge?

Let's keep it real, Wotte got paid up for years contract he only signed last week, no matter how poor the club was last week, that contract was worth more than my and probably your annual salary.

He can use that money to buy a ticket to Egypt, take on the job he was offered there.

As for Kelvin, as I said before, not the best on crosses, sometimes a little dodgey, good shot stopper and one on one in the box not many better, plus he is better than the Bart Boy and the Forecast

The only time in recent history when fans were happy was at the end of 2007/08 when under Nigel Pearson we avoided relegation, Just !
What did he do ? He dropped kelvin Da vis and brought in Wright on loan.
The goals against dried up immediately.
Every successful team has a strong spine.
Goalkeeper, Centreback,
Centre midfield and central striker.
How many of Saints current squad fit that requirement ?
The new manager has a very short time to remedy that.

If I was Wotte I might be asking how the return of Oldknow fits into this 'cleansweep' philosophy. I think he can leave with his head held high, it wasn't his fault we went into admin and got relegated and he did stay loyal at an important time.

I doubt there is a manager in the country would have saints up last season when not able to buy players or even bring in loan players. The squad had little quality or depth. Wotte has been made the scapegoat of that.
I am probably in a minority of one cos however you put it Strachan dumped us.
even 'if' he did have a hip operation you are on your feet in a few weeks and about.
Hoddle did nothing that Matt Le Tiss would not have done.
He went back to the club he loved. He always said he would if the opportunity arose.
Actually i understand that more than Strachan.
Why we have got some guy in the baordroom who was there before i don't know.
I think on admin and managerial fronts we need new faces who have never worked at this club.
Wotte was always on a hiding to nothing i respect the guy and hope he does well enough to show us we were wrong to let him go.

It would be a nice touch if lots of you out there would do the same and wish him well for the future. Having got that out of the way i have 3 managerial candidates to suggest. After being fired from the Tottenham job, Gross returned to his native Switzerland, finding work as the coach of FC Basel. Although the British tabloids retained an image of Gross as a largely incompetent figure, he didn't care and worked steadily to rebuild Basel into the premier force in Swiss football and achieved greater success than when manager of Grasshoppers.

Under Gross' guidance, Basel have now won four Swiss championships, four Swiss Cups, and mounted a fairytale run in the UEFA Champions League in 2002, beating eventual finalists Juventus as well as knocking out Celtic and drawing with Liverpool (twice) and Manchester United. Gross' success in these games against British sides went a long way towards restoring his reputation among the British media and fans.[

First and foremost I would like to clear some issues up that some Saint's fans who clearly know nothing about football, Kelvin Davis is a very good keeper and when Saint's first signed him from Sunderland he had some very bad moments, but since then he has improved massively and his confidence has returned which has made him turn out to be one of, if not the best keeper outside the Premiership and I am ecstatic he has signed for Saint's, although I don't like keepers being captain because they have little influence. Secondly Gordon Strachan left Southampton because he fell out with Rupert Lowe selling his best players and giving him no or little money to replace them with, The so-called hip operation was Ruperts idea because he did not want Strachan dropping him in the s**t and was also part of many confidentiality agreements many ex-managers have signed in the past, Glenn Hoddle never laid any platforms or fondations for Gordon Strachan to get success, Gordon Strachan achieved his success through his very good managerial experience and proved what a very good manager he is and is held in high regard by the majority of Saint's fans and is why so many want him to return, including me. People posting on this site have short memories. The only time in recent history when fans were happy was at the end of 2007/08 when under Nigel Pearson we avoided relegation, Just ! What did he do ? He dropped kelvin Da vis and brought in Wright on loan. The goals against dried up immediately. Every successful team has a strong spine. Goalkeeper, Centreback, Centre midfield and central striker. How many of Saints current squad fit that requirement ? The new manager has a very short time to remedy that.
Don't agree with you there! if it was not for Kelvin last season w2e would have been relegated last Christmas, yes every goalkeepers make mistakes, they are highlighed by producing a goal but over the whole period of a match/season Kelvin gave the team a chance to win.

Hi all don't comment much! However rumour has it that Mr Strachan was at St Marys yesterday. Also there is a definate need to move on! Kelvin Davis is a good keeper. Our main problem has been the last couple of seasons that we DRAW far too many games, bolster midfield and get in some quality strikers perhaps some youngsters from Man U or other Prem clubs that are good enough for this league but don't get a game at the big clubs! COYR the new Saints come on!

Former Celtic boss Gordon Strachan is being lined for a shock return to Southampton.

The Sun says new owner Markus Liebherr sacked Mark Wotte as Saints head coach yesterday, less than 24 hours after buying the club.

And the Swiss billionaire is believed to want former boss Strachan to be part of his new regime at St Mary's - either as boss or a football advisor.

Saints refused to deny reports that Strachan was at the club's training ground yesterday, hours after Wotte's dismissal.

Lets face facts Mark Wotte is a very nice chap but what calibre of players
are going to want to play under him and what track record has he got ? Mr Liebbher please get Gordon Strachen he will be a fantastic asset.

Stupidest comment ever. take it you are no gambler then?? believe it or not that bookmakers are also a business. it is a business that works by minimising risk. through intelligence of a situation, bookmakers will adjust odds to minimise the risk of losing out. therefore, they may know something we don't. or they may be acting on something others know. either way, it is what it is, if people knew redknapp was coming back, skybet wouldn't be giving a price of 66s. just because you think gambling is a 'mugs game'doesn't mean it isn't some peoples hobby.

I fill sorry for Mark Wotte, he should have perhaps stayed on in the academy, but as we all know last seasons results under him wasn't good enough.

My heart say,s due to his loyalty he should have stayed.

But Markus Liebherr is 110% correct in his actions, we need a fresh start a new manager, who is going to be in place for a long time.

We need to get back to LAWRIE McMenemy days , for good football , for stability and then Southampton can start to get respected again on and of the field.

Then we can work to toward the success Southampton had in there early part of their history.

Can I say if any body needs rewarding it is Loen Crouch, he kept the club alive in April by paying the wages. Perhaps he should become an honorary member of the club.

What would have happened if he did not step in??

WGS offered 3 year contract, worth £500k with £150 bonus for any promotion during that time.

Word from the Club says that Strachan has accepted the deal provided he is able to get revenue straight away and that he can allow Henderson to take charge of affairs while he scouts and talks to contats about signings.

Strachan has already earmarked Richard Eckersley of Manchester United as a target after talks took place between QPR and United over the player. Strachan has moved straight in and asked for an initial 6month loan and the option of the remaining season if Fergie accepts that he is being played and getting the experiance.

You are both right. Money does follow the the likely choice. But it can also follow the heart, so it's no real indicator of the truth or we would all be rich.

However, and just for amusement you understand, Sky Bet's Mike Triffitt said: "Strachan is the only candidate that customers have wanted to back since news broke of Wotte's sacking.

"We took a steady stream of decent bets from the Southampton area at odds against and then we had several requests for four-figure bets at 8/13.

"We are close to suspending the market as, if the money is to be believed, Strachan will be making a return to St Mary's."

His tactics in the FA Cup Final still hit a raw nerve as well. If the bookies are thinking WGS is favourite, there will be extremely good reasons, WGS is a extremely able manager, motivator and for that matter coach, in an earlier post I said he did leave us in limbo when he resigned but I would suggest that it was because of RL, we will never know, what with the sue policy that our former chaiman adopts, many people could have told the truth but was very wary of the way RL operated. All in the past the new era has begun!!

If there is any way I can show proof that he has signed and that im not guessing, wait for the Strachan leaves Henderson in charge while he does enquiries with only 4weeks to KO of new season, also the Eckersley deal will confirm im not on a wind up or second guessing.

This is just a list for mugs to pile in and fill the bookies pockets. Doesn't matter how low or high the odds are someone will put their money in dreaming of a killing. You don't see many bookies going bust but how many punters go skint after betting on a 'sure thing'? Only one winner here - SkyBet.
Not a gambler? No, I'm an insurance underwriter in the City so I really know how bookies work and they ain't on the side of the punters! They will deliberately create a market to suck in mugs to offset the money they pay out to winners.

im sorry if i sound rude to you........but sometimes in football being a "nice guy" gets you nowhere.
with whats at stake and the amount of wages involved etc etc the new owner(god bless him) has every right to deploy a new improved man to take the club he owns forward.
1/strachan
2/curbs
3/coppell
with drive and ambition we could seriously get back to the prem in 3 seasons.definatwly.
and the owner knows this.

Enrico Palazzo, Southampton says...

Inspirational former Leeds United skipper Gordon Strachan is poised for a sensational return to management at League One rivals Southampton.

The feisty Scot, who left deposed SPL champions Celtic after their failure to win a trophy last term, is a white hot favourite with the bookies to re-take the hotseat at St Mary's.

Sky Bet have cut Strachan, who was in charge of the south coast clADVERTISEMENTub from October 2001 to February 2004, to 1/5 in their next Southampton manager market after taking a flood of money on the former international to return.

Strachan has been backed down from Sky Bet's initial offering of 4/1, which was available yesterday afternoon when new Southampton owner Markus Liebherr sacked Mark Wotte as head coach, less than 24 hours after buying the club.

Sky Bet's Mike Triffitt said: "Strachan is the only candidate that customers have wanted to back since news broke of Wotte's sacking yesterday.

"We took a steady stream of decent bets from the Southampton area at odds against last night and this morning we had several requests for four-figure bets at 8/13. We are close to suspending the market as, if the money is to be believed, Strachan will be making a return to St Mary's."

Sky Bet make Southampton 5/6 favourites to win their opening league fixture against Millwall (11/4, draw 9/4). Saints start in League One with a ten point penalty and are 25/1 to win the title and 8/1 for an immediate return to the Championship.

Dear Mr liebherr

i really hope you do read the echo fans forum , i am 110% still over the moon that you stood strong and bought this great club of ours and without sounding like a p**pey fan and start moaning and nagging i would just like to express my views on the next manager it seems there has been alot of talk about a certain ex p**pey manager ( dopey adams ) this in my point of view would be a major step back for our great club and football in general. See its like this would you put yucking beef gravy over a lovely swiss roll ?? would you put you beers in the oven ?? would you put dopey adams in charge of the saints?? i really hope not !! ex p**pey players and managers always seem to set off our loyal Boo boys , so as a tiny percentage of Southampton FC fanbase and im sure other will agree but dopey adams p**pey ex manager does'nt belong in soton but mr wgs does ! and so do you ;-).

all the best
thanks

To the new owners of Southampton Football Club if you read this site, I would respectfully suggest that the best manager by far (in my view) would be Gordon Strachan, or second choice Steve Coppell.

In buisness l would never have appreciated others telling me how to do my job, but Football is rather different, the FANS , SUPPORTERS are the life blood of any club, totally ignore them as Mr Rupert Lowe did and it all falls apart, the Founder of the John Lewis / Waitrose Group once said "If you want to catch a Fish, you have to conform to the feelings of the Fish"

As a supporter since 1944, an ex shareholder in "Southampton Leisure Holdings" I tried very hard to make my voice heard at A.G.M.'S but frankly it was a waste of time,

Good luck, and thank you for saving our CLUB.

Season tickets will be renewed on Tuesday, that is a promise, BRIAN from BARTLEY.

Seriously mate, in the world of betting if someone was 1-5 on as he was earlier what is 5-4 then if that is not drifting out?And as for given Adams a chance who exactly was he loyal too?Skates,Arsenal maybe England but does that make him a good manager, his record proves not.My opinion is just that but for me it has to be G.S,Coppell,Alan Curbs and most of all King kev cause i beleive he would sell thousands of extra season tickets and has a proven record at this level.

I got up this morning in NZ wondering about budget.

With the name managers suddenly popping in and out of shops ans sms mentioned in here and the Sky Sports betting going on one thing is for sure: Big money is not only going to be spent on a Manager... that manager is going to have a big money budget to spend on top player to move us up.

One thing is for sure, they will pick on form and experience not on the drivel posted in here. But it's fun ain't it?

Recap on who has been seen locally?
Adams, Strachan, Keegan, Coppell more?

No bet from me but I "quietly hope" we get Keegan with Le Tissier as his assistant. They are great mates, would get on like a house on fire and boost the crowds like crazy.

Matty is in the framework and I just don't see him in the back room or as director of footy because a top flight manager like Keegan or Strachan would want him looking over the shoulder.. he'd be better off learning the trade under an experienced man...so asst to Keegan or maybe Strachan would make sense and would go down brilliantly here.

Matty may even be involved bring home the bacon right now for all we know.
Hope so!

Get this going in your head and it just doesn't go away:

I'm sure that the best available Manager will be selected.

I've quoted that Kevin Keegan would be my choice as he'd do it for himself, the love of our club, our city, Mick Channon & for the memory of Alan Ball.
He's already done it with Fulham, Man City & Newcastle.

I would equally welcome Gordon Strachan (WGS) too.... as he'd get the team hungry and fit with that fire in our belly.

Having said that...I'm no expert.

It feels so strange being able to talk so postively after the past 5 years!.

To be honest....I'm still in shock by our good fortune with our new owner in Markus.

It'll be interesting to see if we'll buy a decent striker who can shot on target?.

From Saints Site:.. says Lallana was injured.. but Echo said he refused to play?
Anyway..hope they do well.. this all sounds sensible except the number of tickets allotted by Cherries for Saints Fans only 1300?

Saints will be taking a strong squad to Dean Court for Saturday's friendly with Adam Lallana likely to make his first pre-season appearance.

The 21-year old midfielder has sat out the first two warm-up matches against non-league opponents with a minor injury but could now be set to make a return to action at the club where his career began.

Caretaker manager Stewart Henderson may also take a look at trialist Graeme Murty but has vowed to give players more game time than was the case during the first two matches as the build up to the new season continues.

Lee Holmes will not travel after picking up an ankle injury after being on the receiving end of a bad tackle in training, but is hoping to be back in action ahead of the start of the new campaign.

Saints squad: (from) Davis, Bialkowski, Murty, Lancashire, Perry, Mills, Gillett, James, Rasiak, Wotton, Paterson, McNish, Doble, Boyle, Pulis, Reeves, Lallana, Thomson, Saville.

Saints have been given an allocation of 1,350 tickets which can ONLY be purchased on the day by away fans.

How nice would it be to sponsor two season tickets for a a little competition to find a deserving young fan and his Dad.

ie: Kids under 14 write in and say what they've done to get to games or get autographs or support the club in some way and we get a wee panel to pick the winner.

I remember chasing the team bus up the training ground in the 60s on my first two wheeler to get autographs.. would love some kid to get a ticket like that today.

Kelvin had a fine season and im happy he`s staying,im just hoping if we end up dominating games like we used to when he first came here,he doesnt show the lapses in concentration he was prone to,i used to be a goalie and it`s easier to look a hero when you`re under the cosh and you are throwing yourself about compared to longer periods of inactivity we hope he`ll be experiencing this coming season.Still good luck to the guy.Its a shame Wotte`s gone too,he came across as a natural leader and smart enough to change things around...last season he didnt stand a chance.Who ever comes in will be coming to a club that faces some big challenges but is clearly on the up for a change,a wave of optimism and goodwill will probably mean just as much to our fortunes as players/tactics,so whoever comes in will have a great chance methinks to turn it round, hopefully with some charisma and style too.

Looks like it's Strachan then...

"The Bookies have stopped taking bets on this market as it seems like the deed has been done and the new Southampton manager is going to be Gordon Strachan. Gordon has recently parted with Celtic and this looks another tough assignment for the Scot but no better man. All of this comes in the wake of the new buyout of the club and it seems that things could be getting better for the southern club.

The press did say they were good mates. We know Matty said himself that he didn;t have the experience to manage the team but to asst kev keegan..well why not. they got the staff to do the routine stuff .. it would take some of the load off Kev and they'd have fun doing what they do best.....

Good Morning Stormy.. it's a b cold evening here... log fire going. Just been reading some of the dailies on line.

Just noticed that despite the papers saying Strachan is top of the list.. Wikipedia says "Kevin Keegan is reportedly set to be named as the new Southampton FC manager within the next few days."

I'd be happy with either but if Kev is a mate of Matty I'd love the combo of them.

Gordy is a stayer and has a house in the south.

Should be a great weekend.. wish I could get a look at the Bournemouth game. Wonder if any of the reported short list of four will be there?

Have a great weekend

PS Duncan.. yes it's real.. Kevin Keegan has wanted to take a lowly club up to the top for ages it is a stated ambition and is considered the challenge they aspire to. Gordy would love the chance to get big money to take Saints to the top in three plus two more year deal he also has a house on the south coast and likes Sassanachs too.

Wish I could come and watch Saints Cherry picking too.

It's weird that sports bets are picking Strachan but Wikipedia has Keegan to be install in the next few days.
To me the Keegan with Matty as asst deal would be fantastic.

I mean it's like adding the coconut cream to a good thai curry. mmmmm
