Mark Wotte has been sacked by Southampton FC

Mark Wotte has been sacked as Saints boss.

A club source said: "We are very grateful for Mark’s efforts.

"This is consistent with having a clean break.

"The recruitment process for a new manager is under way.

"Hopefully there will be somebody in place by the end of next week, maybe earlier than that but there are lots of people to speak to."

A statement from the club, read: "Southampton Football Club can confirm that Mark Wotte has left the Club.

"We wish to recognise Mr Wotte's efforts during a difficult period for all associated with the Club. We wish him well for the future.

"Our decision is part of a wider strategic plan being implemented to improve all aspects of the club's operations, both on and off the field. "In keeping with this plan we can confirm that the search for a new manager has already begun.

"Our search will be conducted in a systematic and professional manner. We will find the right candidate, who will fulfil the criteria necessary to move the Club forward.

"Stewart Henderson will take charge of First Team affairs on a temporary basis.

"We will update fans on the appointment process as soon as possible."

This was definitely on the cards.Wotte should be commended for his commitment to date, but it was pretty evident that he and others were out of their depth.I believe that a replacement has already been lined up.Starting at -10 is not a time for taking risks with unproven Managers.
Individuals who have got teams out of this level before should be favourite as opposed to Managers who have operated at a higher level with bigger budgets and better players. I don't think that you can automatically buy your way out of this league.

Montymontymonty, in the bushes says...

They say a week is a long time in politics...it seems half of that is even longer in football. Guess who said:

" It is such a respectable company and Mr Liebherr is such a respectable businessman.

“His reputation is outstanding and he is exactly what we need for the long term.”

Wotte, who has been retained as Saints boss for another year, said he expects to remain at the club and have an excellent working relationship with the new people in charge.

“I signed a contract as manager for at least one year, so there is no indication they want to change that,” he said.

Sometimes it's just not worth saying anything "quoteable" eh?

And what happens to that person if we get promoted? Do we have to sack them in favour of someone with Championship experience?

They just need to be a good coach who understands football - irrespective of division. If there is enough in the budget then maybe they don't even need to be a coach, but a manager who can use coaching staff.

I feel very sorry for MW but no doubt the reason he was given the 12 month contract was so he would get a year's pay-off.

Coppell, though I think he could do a job for us, seems pretty resilient in knocking his management days on the head.

Wotte gave more in his brief spell with the club than many have over the years

and he showed more fight and managerial skill than Hairy RedTw*at did for us

I wish Mark Wotte all the success for the future (unless he goes up the road - in which case I hope he successfully leads Po*pee from the Premiership to their rightfull place in the Blue Square)

Thanks for being decent Mark - hope you get a new job soon!

Likewise I didn't see this coming but, that said, wasn't signing a year's rolling contract last week a neat way of giving him a golden handshake. A British manager is more likely to have British contacts for the Premier League or Championship loanees of quality that we need to get us out of League 1. I think there is someone on markus liebherr mind or he has got a spokenmen already in contact with a manager , i cant see it being a empty job for a few weeks , this breaking news must off been in the pipeline . Heres how i see it ! listening to bbc radio solent yesterday Mr M liebherr likes to get things in control hes started with the board already .
Mr ML speaks to his advisor > his advisor speaks to MLT > MLT opens his views on who the pinnacle wanted as manager > advisor goes bk to Mr ML > then the rest follows advisor speaks to matty contact and agrees and MW is sacked ( cheers mw for your work and for being faithful goodluck in the next postion ) so manager is in the wings waiting i reckon we will hear by end of the week .

anyway thats what it said on a swiss roll i bought at the saints shop lol

all jokes a side Thanks again MW but ML is on a mission to take us above the seaweed covered dirty rundown council housed landfill site of p***smouth

I am not really surprised that Saint's have parted company with Mark Wotte, However Markus Liebherr knows like me, that Mark Wotte is not going to get this club out of League 1. I would like to thank Mark Wotte for his loyalty and continued support in what has clearly been a very difficult time for all concerned at the club, But our new owner clearly want's to stamp his authority straight away and this is a very clear message indeed. It's a complete fresh start for all concerned and involved at Saint's and with a new higher profile manager in charge would be fantastic in Saint's hitting the ground running and quickly wiping out the ten points, It would also inspire both the players and obviously the supporters which is vital.

Probably an unpopular thing to say but I agree...Saints were really on fire when Hoddle was in charge, more so than Strachs.
Yes unpopular it may be but i admit that i was all for Hod returning when Strach left. I completely agree with the view that we played our best football under the guy (got mediocre players playing flowing football). That said though i think a complete clean sweep is now the way forward, someone like Coppell i think would be a step forward.
Wish Mark Wotte all the best, bit of a surprise that but we really need to hit the ground running. Just hope the club stays financially stable and never put in any position like the last 100 odd days or so.

Doubtless they will appoint some media idiot like Strachan, Keegan or Coppell at an inflated salary who won't hesitate to leave at the first hint of trouble and drop us in the brown stuff. How long before we are in administration again?
I can't believe you said that! How can you possibly compare Herr Liebherr to the Dark Lord? It seems only natural to me that Wotte has gone. He was part of the old regime appointed personally by the Dark Lord. Wotte's main strength seemed to be saying the right thing at the right time. Admittedly, we never really saw what he was made of in terms of ability because he took over in very difficult circumstances but my feeling is that it would have been taking a chance keeping Wotte and that we need someone proven to stand the best chance of overcoming the -10 points this season. I also think that if Wotte was going to go then now was the best time to do it. Not only does it give him maximum opportunity to find something else but it also gives the new guy maximum time before the start of the season. This is also another reason why I think the new guy should be someone with a connection to Saints who understands what the fans her expect. I may be completely wrong on this and I am not going to try to tell Herr Liebherr what to do. He has just saved us from oblivion and can do pretty much anything he wants as far as I am concerned. Glenn Hoddle was the best footballing Manager at Saints in last 20 years, and GS fed off his success. He wasn't popular with some players because of his arrogance and some fans did not like his apparent lack of loyalty when his boyhood club came chasing his expertise.

So what, loyalty counts for little in today's world (unfortunately) far better to have the team playing great football, then Managerial popularity will automatically follow.

Will he choose to go back to a third tier club at his time of life, only he is fed up with his Spanish Academy and would welcome a fresh challenge undwer the new regime here, which I must commend for getting off to a fast start, by promising to bring in a strong management team for the long term. Dismissing MW is the right way to start that process. Fans must be patient though.

Fresh from his recent triumph at Newcastle!

Some have praised the decisive action that has been taken, but mistakes can also be the result of such action!

Now the situation is, new owner that no one knows.
Who will appoint a new board of directors, that no one is familiar with.
A new manager will be appointed, who does not know the playing staff and they will not know him and, of course, he will want to bring in his own staff!

If this could have been done at the end of last season, that would have been OK, but to have a game of musical chairs this close to a new season - one starting on minus points - is not, in my opinion, setting off on the right foot!

I thought this too, seems like the new broom's not sweeping as clean as we'd like.
I'm frankly disgusted with the way this has come about.

This decision was obviously made in advance of the take over as part of the strategic plan. So could have been signalled to Mark Wotte before he came back.

That would have been the right and honourable thing to do.

I do like good hard solid management but it should also be fair and straight not with knives in the back.

This was fairly apparent by the wording of the announcement that the new coo was holding a meeting with Mark today..

He should at the very least have had a job within the team.

My thought was that any replacement for Mark Wotte would have to be a proven winner with a solid record of attracting top performers... so it had better happen.

Reading some of the semi racist comments above is also very disconcerting. This is nothing to do with what country the ppl are from it's ability...

Just hope it's a really top flight manager the fans will actually get in behind and support.

Good morning from NZ
But not for Mark Wotte... Thank you Mark, sorry it happened like this you really did not deserve a knife in the back after the way you supported the club in a dire time .. Hope you got a decent pay out. Cheers

I agree with the point re Oldknow too. Who is he affiliated to? Is it a signal of whom may be on the new board. Is Oldknow effectively running the club at the moment and is Killer taking the lads to Bournemouth?

Has Oldknow got any record of big event management because if we are serious about making money for the club we need to diversify. I would be running concerts with a portable stage and floor...

What next... Beckham (that would get the forums revving.)

The positive aspect of this is that it signals that the budget is likely to be bigger than I hoped for that they surely must be hunting a big name and have real ambitions for cutting the points fast.

A tad harsh?
The position of manager is way too important to be given out on the basis of 'loyalty'.
The've got a professionial football club to run. Plus loads of employees to pay, loyalty aint gonna pay their wages mate. And it dose'nt keep the fans happy either or win you games. As I said earlier the question has to be:

Is he the best we could possibly do?

And the answer was no.

The decision made itself and Wotte will understand that.
Why cant you?

A 22% win rate, as reported on SSN, is just not good enough and there was real possibility of being relegated again with Wotte because of starting on -10. Football is results driven and quite simply Wotte was not up for it.
What we need is a manager of proven ability and I think we'll be pleasantly surprised of who is coming in. I believe the new manager has already been chosen just waiting to be named.
Make no mistake Southampton will be run with the expectation of success in keeping with new owner.

The guy harping on about Hoddle doing nothing in training must be living in cloud cookoo. I went to Staplewood a few times to watch the training and I have never seen a manager more involved with the training in my life. You want to watch Redknapp if you want to see someone doing nothing duing training, you would be lucky if he turns up!! Hoddle not only was hands on in training but I also know he showed a very keen involvement in the building of St Marys and had alot of input. There is alot to Hoddle and his football knowledge is second to known. If they are looking for someone top in their field Hoddle certainly fits that bill ahead of alot of other names I have seen on here. Personally I dont think they will employ a previous manager as they want to go forward and not revert to the past, therefore my choice would be Coppell. That said Hoddle would be my dream ticket and would instill me with confidence.SW wait-week, dont think we will have to wait that long.

Come off it you muppets - Wotte was always going to go - who on earth would want to keep him - 4 wins out of 18 - and frankly, he wasn't up to it - anyone can stay loyal if they are being paid to do so. Honestly, some of you idiots on here, have not got a clue - the one piece of common sense spoken by the new owner, is that he is not going to splash money around on premiership players, as we aren't a premiership club - buy the players that will get you out of League 1 - then do the same next season, if we do ( unlikely as it is ) get promoted. More importantly - get the family club back - get the likes of Tiss, Doddsie, Franny involved - get the heart back in the club - so many people want the club to suceed and the owners have the opportunity to do so - get a Manager who knows the club inside out and whose heart is in it !!

Cheers I agree with the point re Oldknow too. Beckham (that would get the forums revving.) The positive aspect of this is that it signals that the budget is likely to be bigger than I hoped for that they surely must be hunting a big name and have real ambitions for cutting the points fast.
It's been a day and you're already moaning, brilliant.
did you not see the interview with him at sms???? He was asked after he spoke to the swiss, 'are you going to remain in your position as head coach at southampton?' and he completely avoided the question, he would have been well aware that his position was in serious doubt and as soon as I saw that interview, to me, it was clear he was going to be leaving. He has done ok out of us, he stood by us, cant mock him for that, fair play to him, but how can you say it was a knife in the back!? Marcus Liebherr has saved our club and is looking like a real serious businessman who wants to put us back to what we were, or better. Cannot believe you are complaining already!!!! Some saints fans really need to wake up. Some people really are never happy i guess. Liebherr has stated that it was comments made by us fans on THIS website that made him feel really confident about taking over this club, the passion, the loyalty... lets just hope to god he doesn't see your plain stupid remark. nothing sensible to say? dont say it please.

COYS!
Liebherr, an overwhelming majority (i'd say near every single damned one) will commend you for taking us over and welcome you with open arms.

Up the saints!

Much as making Saints a family club sounds all nice, I dont think sentiment and putting all the old players back on the payroll is on the agenda. They are history and it looks like the new owners are only interested in the future. Cant dwell on the past nd rely on the old timers. We could give Phil Boyer and Steve Moran a bell and see if they fancy a seat on the board too... Nice one Bulley

I feel Wotte deserved a chance, but we don't know what lesser role (if any) he may have been offered. I can also understand that the new owners would want their own man from the start. I'll back their judgement, although I would love to know who is currently advising ML on football issues.

Saints Mike, Southampton says...

A bit surprised, never expected that to happen so soon, but heyho that's football, here one day gone the next.

If ML know's anything it won't be Donkey.

I don't want Keegan (he will walk away) Hoddle is the same (Judus).

Dowie is not good enough, he's a good coach but not so good as a manager.

Don't think it will be WGS.

Steve Coppell would be ok, but I don't think he would take it.

Micky Adams know's league one but hasn't really set the world alight with his management style.

Aidey Boothroyd is quite good, knows how to handle young players, his teams have been known to play attractive free flowing football.

I just hope whoever it is, that ML has him in place by Monday, and that he is here for the long term, not just a quick fix, we stability now.

These are happier times at last. A new wealthy owner with a new board to be put together and hopefully a few new players and an experienced coach. My feelings and praise go out to Mr Wotte who has given 110% in work commitment but the new team at the helm I presume want to hit the ground running and reverse those -10 points asap, which is a good thing. This shows the positive ambition of the new owners and that it is not just a playground to play in. A lot of people are owed credit, the fans for voicing their feelings, Mr Wotte for standing by when he could have walked out ages ago, most of our managers in the past would have jumped ship. Mr Fry deserves credit and has been very timely when he has had to put out warnings on the future of the club. MLT and the pinnacle group including Leon Crouch deserve credit for prolonging the future of the club for making the first move and perhaps geting the ball moving in the right direction. Kelvin Davis for being Loyal!!!! (Unlike Surman). And to those fine humans employed at St.Marys who have fought on in the day to day running of the club knowing not only that their jobs were at stake and working unpaid but also the hard work they have put in knowing what a disaster it would be if Southampton FC NO LONGER EXISTED! With the best facilities in the South and such a great heritage with such great fans we should look onwards and upwards and perhaps put our stadium forward as a potential world cup venue in 2018 ahead of Pompeys over ambitious bid. Thank you for putting a smile back on the fans of Southampton FC Mr.Liebherr.

Who had the authority to decide to make him head coach anyway? A week ago we were in admin. The outgoing owners? (Bit pointless) Mark Fry? (Bit cheeky ) The new potential owners? (Bit illegal)And he wangled a years contract before anyone knew the direction of the club. If we had have gone under in the following few days he would have been one of the creditors with that new contract.

I'm being realistic.....we couldn't even beat Eastleigh or Totton!.

Today's decision was the correct one.

A 22% win rate is not good enough considering our -10 points position.

We do need a strong Manager and backroom staff.

There is no time for sentiment considering our tough position.

We as fans must all realise by now that Southampton FC has an exciting future and we need to RAISE our standards.

We have a fantastic owner who we could only dreamt about especially as Markus is passionate about our team and city.

I'M SO EXCITED!.

PS: I'd love to see Jamie Beckford in our squad with scary players like Henderson and Howard.

A good move maybe him and Keegan?? Keegan was a good manager at lower level with Fulham and Newcastle. Keegan as manager and Shearer as his assistant. Keegan a fans favorite and Shearers wife a local girl, ummm that sounds like a modern day dream ticket to me other than that Kevin Keegan was Shearer's favorite player as a child, I am not trying to forward suggestions but I like that idea.

God, (I've been a fan for over 50 years)we do live in the past! Nothing worse than a former/celeb manager now the worse for wear (from booze or stress - name no names) coming back for a last big drink from the money man. Same goes for players. All the evidence is that clubs stripped of players with a ten point pen will struggle to avoid a further relegation, so we need someone who knows the club, is fit & hungry, and with good contact with quality - not ancient - players. You can't buy players like, er, heavy earth movers or cuckoo-clocks, however much they play like that.

I have been supporting the Saints since 1959. I now live in Ireland. If you call me a Portsmouth supporter again you might get a visit from someone from a Belfast greyhound track who would point out the error of your ways. You might need your knee caps.

Further to the appointment of a new manager, surely we don't want a has been like Keegan, Strachan, Hoddle, Curbishly or Coppell. All they would do is sign a load of has been players at inflated saleries and probably jump ship when the going got tough, with a large payoff of course. Get realistic. We are not going to get promoted this season. Mid table would be success. What we need is stability after all the turmoil since the Redknapp reign. We have the nucleous of a decent squad which only needs a few experienced additions. That is why I would have kept MW in place but he has gone now. I think the only realistic candidate is the lad from Exeter who has probably taken them as far as they can go.

I like the sound of either Kevin Keegan, Gordon Stachan, Aidy Boothroyd or Steve Coppell as our new manager, one of these four and I would be over the moon.

I know lots of you will disagree but I think we have a bit of a dilemna.I think that we have three different managers required who all need different skills. 1) To get us out of Division 1 into the Championship. 2) To get us out of the championship into the Premiership (which is totally different to getting out of Division 1) & finally 3) To manage our side in the premiership (which is a million miles from the other two jobs). i really dont think that one manager can do all three. Has to be the right move, we need a good experienced Englishman who knows what it takes for the club to climb back to where we belong. How weird..I was thinking exactly the same thing this afternoon. Our badge looks like it was a school competition winner.

firstly thank u MW.
On the issue of new manager. Why shearer he was a great player but that does not mean that hes a good manager. Maybe in a coaching role to learn his trade. MLT as manager NO. He is a ledgend and if it all went pete tong on him he would loose that status completely with people. Also if he had been manager at spurs and the Saints job came up dont you think he would have done what Hoddle did and go join us. God yes. I would have if i'd ever been in that situation. KK no if the going gets tough the KK gets going. I dont know who should get the job but who ever it is its a long term job. I quite like the idea of Darren Furgie's-son. Great contacts young but all ready proving to be like his father. May be with the help of an older guy like SM.
lastly thank you once again Mr Liebherr.

I realise being called a Po*pee supporter is a huge insult to you - I apologise!

could not disagree more with the points about strachan, we played our best football under strachan, had our best finish in the PREMIER LEAGUE and lead us to a FA cup final. However, i do agree we about the new start, we do need someone who hasnt been at the club before, i just wanted to make the point that strachan was a great manager

OK,I think it's crappy. The man was willing to work for nothing to continue what he'd started and he was given the post of Head Coach less than a week ago and now he's been given the push. He should have been given a fighting chance in the new season...so what price loyalty. Who do we get to replace him....I don't really think GS wil want to come back and it sounds like Jose Mourinho is pretty settled in Milan!!! Thanks for everything Mark...life ain't fair.
Sorry Angie, we are starting on -10 and there is no way Wotte should have been given a 'chance'. Yes he was loyal but it suited him to be. He was also inexperienced. If you had put in millions of your own money in the knowledge that you were starting on -10 would you have taken a chnce on an unproven manager? I don't think so. What we need is the best we can get for this division. Someone who is going to get the blood racing and put bums on seats and set out the stall for ML and Saints. We are no longer a club without ambition. Wotte is a decent enough guy (even if the more I heard from him the more he came across as self serving) and it was always going to be a difficult decision to get rid of him but it was the right thing to do and also right not to wait. We need the new guy in as soon as possible to stand the maximum chance of getting straight back out of Div 1.

I don't feel too sorry for Wotte, I am pleased for him that he signed up for a year a week or so ago. That look like a very good decision financially for him. He was loyal but then so what - that is easy if you are in a job above your capabilities and no one else would ever offer you something better. Good luck to the guy but he has done ok out of this.

Excellent news for all Saints that this fella means business. Strach would be perfect but I would take Coppell or Tisdale gladly.

The sacking of a manager that has only had boys to do a man's job?
I bet the ones that are crowing now were also saying, a couple of weeks back, how great the future would look if the Pennant group took over!
With regard Gosportsaint's comment about the smell at Portsmouth Harbour, I note that the smell in the Staplewood area is 'causing a stink' with the local residents!
