Two little too late for Sants

Saints put in a spirited second half performance but still left Burnley 3-2 losers after a woeful start to the game ended up costing them dear.

Jan Poortvleit’s side were simply dreadful in the opening stages of the game at Turf Moor and were 3-0 down after just 11 minutes - and it could have been even worse.

With little to lose in the second half Saints charged forward and managed to pull two goals back but there was just too much to do rescue a point.

Burnley almost got off to a dream start Martin Paterson held off two Saints defenders as he burst into the area after just two minutes.

He got away his shot which beat Kelvin Davis but thundered off the underside of the bar and fortunately for Saints bounced back out and clear of danger.

But it took just another two minutes before Burnley did take the lead.

Wade Elliott played a ball in that Chris Perry tried to stop but unluckily deflected past Davis and into the corner for 1-0.

It could have got worse for Saints on six minutes when Chris Eagles bent in a left wing free kick that Davis blocked at his near post.

However, the relief was short lived and from the corner it was 2-0.

Stephen Caldwell headed back towards goal where Davis seemed to have it under control and caught it but then spilt it to the grateful Joey Gudjonsson in the middle of the six yard box and he headed goalwards and from point blank range David McGoldrick on the line couldn’t keep it out.

Incredibly it was 3-0, and game effectively over, after just 11 minutes as Saints leaky backline shipped yet another.

Elliott again was involved, getting in down the Saints left and cutting back to Gudjonsson whose first time sidefooted finish left Davis with no chance.

Clarke Carlisle became the first man in the book on 13 minutes for a foul as the game settled down to a more sensible rhythm, though in truth both teams looked pretty shell-shocked by what had gone on.

After Jack Cork had deflected an effort narrowly wide Burnley hit the woodwork again on 20 minutes.

Chris McCann was given time and space to shoot from 20 yards and Davis did well at full stretch diving to his right to keep it out.

However, the ball popped out to Paterson who from a tight angle fired in an effort which struck the outside of the post and went behind.

Davis was in action on 24 minutes, this time diving to his left to stop Eagles’ 30 yard strike.

Paterson again got in on the act, firing a shot after a clever free kick routine straight at Davis who collected the shot.

Saints managed their first effort on target on 34 minutes from McGoldrick but it was not cleanly struck and barely made it to the goal where Brian Jensen stopped it.

Eagles tried his luck from distance again a minute later but Davis saved it.

Poortvliet made a change on 35 minutes as Morgan Schneidlerin was replaced by Alex Pearce who went to centre half with Cork moving into a holding midfield role.

Saints threatened two minutes later as Andrew Surman whipped in a free kick from the right which McGoldrick headed just wide while Lloyd James was the next in the book.

Everything Saints tried went wrong and at half time they looked dead and buried but almost grateful they weren’t further behind.

Saints had optimistic early second half penalty appeals waved away when Surman went down in the area.

Then, after Bradley Wright-Phillips had a shot blocked in the area, McGoldrick’s sidefooted follow up was deflected wide.

But a bright Saints start brought them a badly needed goal on 49 minutes.

Burnley failed to clear a corner, Jason Euell beat Jensen to the loose ball and cut it back. It went all the way out to Rudi Skacel charging in from left back to rifle home a shot from just inside the area for 3-1.

Pearce was booked moments later after a late challenge and from the free kick Burnley flicked a header just wide of the far post.

Saints almost went and pulled another back on 54 minutes from a corner but Burnley managed to scramble it away.

But the comeback was well and truly on when Saints made it 3-2 on 61 minutes.

Euell found himself in acres of space and picked out Surman in the area and on the turn he fired across Jensen into the far corner.

Saints almost shot themselves in the foot when Davis’ attempted punch went straight back up in the air but they managed to block Robbie Blake’s shot.

Burnley made a change on 64 minutes with Steven Thompson replacing Blake.

Suddenly the momentum had shifted and the atmosphere changed at Turf Moor with Saints looking the more likely and the Clarets getting very jittery.

Saints could have grabbed an equaliser on the break when Surman played in Adam Lallana but his cross saw McGoldrick offside and putting wide anyway.

Carlisle found himself with the chance to shoot after a loose ball from a corner arrived at his feet on 75 minutes but he fired wide.

Then just moments later the Clarets had a gift wrapped chance to seal the three points when Paterson got away down the left and crossed low into the six yard box but Thompson’s sidefooted shot was brilliantly saved by Davis.

Burnley had a second wind form somewhere and Saints were clinging on for a final late push.

The next on target was Eagles but Davis was strong at his near post to turn it wide.

Saints made a change with six minutes remaining with Jordan Robertson coming on for James. Cork went to right back and Euell into midfield as Poortvliet pushed two up front.

Wright-Phillips thought he had a chance to level it when the ball reached him at the far post but just as he went to shoot Graham Alexander got in a challenge.

Saints did win an injury time corner that Davis went up for but Burnley killed the game off and took the three points they earned in the opening stages of the match.

All week we had Saints wringing their hands about conceding two goals in fifteen minutes at Palace, and promising to tighten up. Today we let in three in the first eleven minutes, with two more shots hitting our woodwork in the first half hour. Pathetic.

We've been in Division 3 (2) before. No doubt we will be again - but not this season.

And why do people have to be so pathetically insulting to a coach who is wining a good deal of praise for his his first six months in the English league (not from some Saints fans, clearly, but from people who actually know what they talking about). He strikes me as being the best coach we've had probably since Hoddle, and we are playing more attractive football now than then.

Our problem remains that the quality of the players we have. Silk purses and sow's ears etc. And as we keep trying to say, the quality is not likely to get better anytime soon because we have no money.

The only way the squad is going to improve is by having a coach like Portvliet who can improve what we have. Lumpen lumping coaches that so many seem to want would not have the first idea how to get the best from this lot and then I would fear for our survival in this division.

In the meantime let's hope for some of today's second half performance in the first half next time.

Problems are in defense and attack. We have a great keeper and loads of fancy dan midfielders, who will undoubtedly be sold in January and then never get beyond the subs bench. We need big at the back, fullbacks who can defend, midfielders who can track back (Surman just throws his hands in the air when he loses the ball) and someone who can put the ball in the net.

We haven't got any of those, but we can't half pass it around in midfield. I'm not too sure that the Championship is ready for 100% football and it won't get anyone promoted when the normal promotion teams are based around a big central defender, a big striker and good width. We don't have any of this and haven't addressed the centre back issue for years.

And another thing ...... Portvliet - First half of the season - D minus. Must learn from you mistakes and must learn what English football is about. Lowe - D minus. Sort out the finances or sell the club. I don't want to see your face anywhere and burn that tracksuit immediately. You're supposed to be a chairman. Be one - not a media star. If you want to be seen on the telly, then put your name in for Celeb Air. Saints Away fans - A plus, just incredible. Northam End - A plus, just incredible. Other stands C minus. Get singing (including me). Stay aways - E minus. You might as well go and support Pompey, because that's the effect you're having on the club.

Embarrassed, Ashamed and Disgusted with the whole Saints set up. Jason Euell was being used in the first half as Saints sole striker, that is not going to scare any opposition. We only got back into it because Burnley got complacent. We need to get our decent players who have been sent out on loan, back to Southampton before it is too late and we end up in the Div 1 wilderness, there will be more empty seats at St Mary's than DFS on a Monday morning.

good post, what you said made a lot of sense, personally though im beginning to worry about relegation, unless we can get the players to perform better at home and win more games,i`d expect us to lose away to Burnley, because they`re a decent side in form, but throwing away a win last week against Sheff Weds has really hurt us and im wondering if the players genuinely have the heart for the battle.I hope they do and i`ll keep backing Jan and the boys.Saints for life.

We need better turn out to games home and away (especially should be home as its local, no reason why no1 shouldnt go!!!). But please keep the faith, they aren't players who don't care. The manager is honest with what he says, yeah okay maybe honesty dosnt get us the 3points everyweek but he knows where we are going wrong and he trys to make up for that. Just keep the faith! It is a sad fact that in the season of Christmas we have to forget the fantasy of a Saints team playing well and winning and instead prepare for a relegation dog fight.
Those contributors and other fans who want to see the back of Jan the man will have a long wait I'm afraid. He is RLs appointment and whilst RL is in charge, he will stay. We simply cannot afford to offload him and could certainly not afford or attract anyone better to turn things around.

What JP needs is to understand what fans have been saying about his choice of system and personnel. I am fed up with seeing the same underachieving side week in week out, but we have not got anything better to replace them. No money in January and a loan list getting close to the maximum allowed.

Unless we see RL kicked out on 23rd, and much as i would welcome that it is about as likely as twelve feet of snow on Christmas Day.
Most clubs would sell out to a half decent buyer, so we are well down the list.

Realistically the most we can hope for is to escape the drop. Sorry to sound pessimistic.....I think i am being realistic. but my faith in seeing us achieve that is going fast.

If it wasn't for you and that poison dwarf on the board, St Mary's would average similar home gates to Carrow Road. It has nothing to do with the credit crunch. It has everything to do with how much you have alienated a large measure of the fan base at this football club.

Ian Branfoot, Terry Hurlock, Barry Horne, Neil Maddison.....oh happy days, eh? and Branfoot didn't think that Matty warranted a place in the side!!!! Do we really want to encourage that kind of football again? Boot It....BOOT IT!!! Ah the poetry and the culture.
Last season the results were better (albeit slightly) but how enjoyable was it watching Youssef Safri, Jason Euell, Chris Makin, Darren Powell, Wayne Thomas, Jermaine Wright, John Viafara and Vincent Pericard grind out a 1-0 win against Leicester? Let us not forget the 5-0 against Preston, Sheff Wed & Hull, even the wins Saints had were hardly exciting!!! Except for a Stern John piece of magic there was nothing to shout about last season or the season before that.....at least now there is some good football being played. I'm not trying to kid anyone that these current lads will win anything this season or next...but the season after???? They are young lads. They are what we have. They are nieve, lack a bit of strength and a bit of nouse that comes with experience. They are also very frustrating......bec
ause how can you control so much of a game yet not win it or score more often??? QPR 4-1!!!! 10 men....but outplayed QPR for most of the game!!! A bit of direct power and goalscoring strenghth did for Saints.
You can't blame Jan for the players he is playing. He has no money to buy or loan an experienced centre back a central midfield or centre forward....which we all feel we need.....his loans have to be young guns who need experience and are a much cheaper option.........but personally I love Jack Cork and would take him on permanently (Pompey apparently are casting envious glances) so we'll have to enjoy the football and tear our hair out at the results because apart from Jan pushing Lallana up alongside McGoldrick putting together the fabulously successful pairing at youth and reserve level (have we tried that....ever?? maybe I missed it) nothing much can change as far as the team is concerned.......unle
ss of course we sell!!
And if the story in the Sunday Mirror has any foundation then we might as well all give up any hope and go home!!!
Adam Lallana and Andrew Surnam to Stoke for £3m (the pair!!!) Clubs and the press seem to think because we are financially challenged, clubs can quote any stupid price and we will be grateful to get 40 quid a set of tracksuits and Tony Pulis's son in return for two U-21 Internationals.....c
hrist....lets bite their hand off...shall we?
£1.5m for each of those two is not only disrespectful and insulting, but if our leader thought.....well hey...it could get the bank off our backs for a while, then he needs shooting!! If we got £3m for the pair, none of that money would go back into the team......let me say that again "None" of that money would be spent on the team. It would all go to the bank and the team would be as good as we are ...........minus Adam Lallana and Andrew Surnam. At least ticket prices will be cheaper at Stockport....yeah?
Then next season, the bank would look at the potential revenue in Div 1 and guess what???? Yep....you are already ahead of me.
IF we HAVE to sell some of our best players, then ask for £5-6m EACH....at least!! Because that will scare away the chancers......Rory Delap plays for Stoke for christ sake and we all remember how good our 'most expensive signing ever' was!!!!!
If Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea Man U, Villa, Spurs or Man City have a big cheque book and want to buy then it's a big carrot for both players and the club. The players go to play for a top flight premier league team (and good luck to them), whilst the club pay off some debt to the bank and have some cash to help out the brilliant young lads left! I am sure after reading the Mirror headlines Adam and Andrew were 'Stoked' about going to Stoke!!! Who, lets face it are probably (but not definitely) gonna come back down again.....and quite what Tony Pulis thinks he's gonna do with Adam Lallana????...put him on a rack and stretch him to 6' 5" so he can join the Potteries RAF Squadron no doubt. Adam would be like a 4' 2" basketball player joining an ancient Harlem Globetrotters...just standing there watching the ball fly around above his head. "I don't want none of those, beating 5 players and sliding through an exquisit ball to Sidibe rubbish!! Just get on the end of one of Rory's Rockets.....that's what I've paid tuppence and bag of liquorice allsorts for"-said Pulis

How do you know I wasn't there you mug.
Ex Saint, exactly, ex another journey man who would probably be extremely embaressed at the association.
Anyway shouldn't the rules of the sex offenders register stop you having internet access, you wanna watch your probation officer doesn't find out.
Like I keep saying, look at the league positions.

Patheitc, bitter little man. You were spouting your rubbish on here during the game you goon. You probably can't afford to go now you finally dragged yourselves out of The Nationwide and are playing the big boys.

Don't bother trying to insinuate I'm a sex offender, when YOU live in the most crowded, inbred city in the U.K. We know what goes on in those cramped terrace houses you sicko.

Done in by a journey man, ha ha ha your words not mine.

Mind you you're pathetic little town is still considering a 1970's type wow factor.
Oh and you are a sex offender, I have contacts and if it's not you then someone with access to your internet provider is on the register.
You seem to be the bitter one n)nce boy, going on and on about one defeat. We're 8th in the Prem you moron.

Say what you want about our great city, with it's wow factors as the cruise ships pass on the way to dock next to your rusting pier, at least we're a REAL City, with history and historical people who are our own and not borrowed. If someone stopped for a dump at Soton station you'd be claiming a historical link.

Yes you'd love to, fact is you couldn't, saying that, if you have the balls, write down your local and I'll pop in, as long as it isn't a gay bar. Cause I'd like to give you a good hiding, then again, you probably weigh about 7 stone and **** watered down washing up liquid type sperm, in other words a pathetic, weak individual.
