SAINTS head coach Jan Poortvliet is looking forward to the “ultimate test” when his side face Manchester United in the FA Cup third round.

The European and English champions will visit St Mary’s, after being drawn against Saints, during the first weekend of January for the game.

Poortvliet said: “I was back in Holland when I heard, and my whole family was there.

“It was a great moment and it’s what you hope for as a coach, and it will be a fantastic occasion for all the boys and for the fans."

It will also be a chance for Poortvliet to pit his wits against United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and he believes his side could pull off a massive shock.

“I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “Sir Alex is the best coach in England in terms of what he has won over the years and I’m curious to see how we will fare against them.

“It will be the ultimate test. We will be going for it and if we take our chances then anything is possible.

“It’s another game in another competition and who knows what might happen.”
