United will be "ultimate test" says Jan

SAINTS head coach Jan Poortvliet is looking forward to the “ultimate test” when his side face Manchester United in the FA Cup third round.

The European and English champions will visit St Mary’s, after being drawn against Saints, during the first weekend of January for the game.

Poortvliet said: “I was back in Holland when I heard, and my whole family was there.

“It was a great moment and it’s what you hope for as a coach, and it will be a fantastic occasion for all the boys and for the fans."

It will also be a chance for Poortvliet to pit his wits against United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and he believes his side could pull off a massive shock.

“I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “Sir Alex is the best coach in England in terms of what he has won over the years and I’m curious to see how we will fare against them.

“It will be the ultimate test. We will be going for it and if we take our chances then anything is possible.

“It’s another game in another competition and who knows what might happen.”

Go on son!

You know how Jan's been talking about how we're going to absolutely wipe the floor with someone soon? Well, I reckon it's going to be against Manure. What are the odds on another 6-3?

Jan here you go again. Talk is cheap.

I will be happier than you if we beat the likes of Man U. Though if you think you can compete really with the way you have been playing football at the moment, then you are about to get a shock.

Our only hope this season Jan will be Kelvin, and if he on form he has been all season and the way he has keep this crap season single handed better than it might of been then we might have an outside chance at best.

Just for you.

Jan wanted this game, and thinks we can compete.

This season I think we most certainly will not be able to compete.

If it was not for Kelvin our goalie, we would be in bigger crap this season than we are now, i.e. we would of lost if it was not for Kelvin last Saturday against Chalton. He is having an awsome season.

I would love to beat Man U, who would not. I think our only hope is if Kelvin is in the top form he is now for the game, because they will punish our short comings, and sadly we have plenty at the moment.

Lastly Jan talks a lot, like it's coming, we going to thrash someone, we going to get so many points from so many games. To date he keeps failing, and some are happy with it. I am not London Saint, and if he was not Lowe project and pet gamble he would not be getting away with this. He talks a good game, and comes across as a nice guy. Though the fact is this is a step up, and I think he not up to it! Today he talking himself up again, say he wanted to compete with the likes of Alex....please

Hope that gone someway to clearing it up for you London Saint. If I have failed again, well that's your lot.

errr ive been coming on here for well over a couple of years, generally i post sensible comments and opinions about my beloved club.

Gosh, it seems like only yesterday we brought in a foreign manager to this once great club, now so filled with turmoil anger and grief.

We then said to the man - right there is no cash in the club, and everyone in the boardroom is loathed with a vengeance. You have to get rid of all your senior professionals and there is absolutely no chance you can bring in anyone of any substance or experience. Then, we want you to take hold of a bunch of kids who have naff all experience at playing at this level, and amidst all the anger, hatred, and name calling, you will have the uneviable task of trying to survive in this league, and oh by the way, we want to see these lads moulded into a team that can actually play football. During this time you will play to half empty stadiums and will receive far more abuse from some of your own fans than any away support could throw at you. They will hurl abuse, invent things about you, and taunt you with accusations of being the gay boyfriend of the chairman.

So here we are at almost the half way point and what do we have? The team has at times played some superlative football bringing praise from many quarters, and against the odds won a few games, even away from home against the high flying Reading, and during this traumatic time they have had to achieve this despite having an already decimated squad further ripped apart by injuries and suspensions. We currently sit above the relegation zone and lie some 10 points away from the play off positions.

Sorry Jan - you have been an unqualified disaster and should be sacked instantly. The fans cannot be wrong can they, with all their worst fears that you were only coming here for a foothold into English football.

You absolute buffoons. What this man has achieved so far this season is nothing short of incredible, and O.K. what if we do lose to Man U - if we get absolutely bloody slaughtered, will that bring a smile to the faces of all you 'so called' fans. Man U have slaughtered better equipped teams than us in the past, including the best in Europe, so where is the disgrace if we go out in the first round to them.

One thing I do know is that these kids will be up for it, give it their best shot, and the saddest thing about all of this is that they will ge going out there to play their hearts out - FOR YOU.

You should be deeply ashamed.

There are those of us who will be keeping on keeping the faith.

Yeah, I know it is another long post, but I don't give a ****.

All rubbish - I just say what I tink and when I see something I think is rubbish or really unecessarily negative I have to respond.

derek of holbury, the right wing salesman boring everybody again with his patronising monologues. Those of us who love the club, are season ticket holders, members or fans that buy tickets for games are entitled to post our thoughts on team selection, state of the club etc.
If you really do attend games go and listen to the views of supporters on the concourse at half time, you may find your view is in the minority. Those of us that love the club have watched the mismanagement and subsequent decline of the Saints with dismay. However I would watch Saints even if they played in the Conference League.

Invidia, southampton says...
10:18pm Mon 1 Dec 08

For the sake of Derek and UTS and yes even Denzil, this club has two sets of fans, we have on one side fans who attend matches this Season and yes probably last season and beyond, on the other hand we have fans who do not attend this season but did last season and beyond, these two camps can be described as non ambitious and the other as ambitious, the non ambitious are quite happy with the status quo with Rupert Lowe, they don't want the boat rocked for fear of losing all (understandable) the other camp can be described as the ambitious, they want the club to move on and grow, they want bigger and better sucess (understandable) but with someone else in charge. You can be assured that both camps are happy when Saints win and thoughly miserable when they lose for both camps are real fans. Now this is where logic flies out the window any real business man will tell you that your business is only as good as your customers and that you should use every tool available to you, to gain more customers and the only way To keep custmers is to give them what they want the maxim "the customer is always right" Now lets go back to our two camps of fans the non ambitious will try to convince each other that what they are doing is correct for their cause, whereas the ambitious will try and convince everyone that there is better than what we have at this time. An analogy of this can be seen in nature where you have the gazelle quite happy grazing and will occasionally fight off threats and then returns to feed, whereas the lion will attack all and protect it's territory. I have been told that Rupert Lowe is a very good business man but does he apply the basic business rules of keeping and enlarging his customer base? is he happy to bask in the sun and graze or does he fight off all to protect his territory of course he does both this is what makes him such an enigma and dangerous as quite frankly he does not give a ****. I am sorry to have carried on so long but for the sake of the fans and yes we are all real fans the non ambitious should stand with the ambitious and yes again it is that way round we all fight together for as long as we are devided rupert will just carry on grazing in the sun and we will go nowhere. The youngsters are becoming a team let the fans do the same and become a team also. It is possible to change things for the better

Some facts robnewbury

I do support the Saints
Have done for over 40 years
Have a season ticket
Go to all the home games
Go to some of the away games
No rules against writing boring monologues on this site that I have seen
Don't have to agree with you to be a true fan
Don't have to hate Lowe to be a true fan
Do speak to and listen to fans and actually they do not all agree with you
I would watch Saints also whatever League they are in
Because I am passionate about the Club I support, and care enough to write about it on this site does not necessarily make me patronising

As you quite correctly state you are perfectly entitled to post your thoughts on team selection, state of the club etc, and actually - so am I. I am also entitled (as are you) to pass comments on those thoughts should I so desire.

I have only posted facts on this one but I fully expect that you will find something in there to make you believe I am being patronising.

Why does it irk you so much just because my views oppose yours. Would you write scathing comments I wonder if my long winded posts were to fully endorse what you say.

I keep keeping the faith even if it is seen as patronising.

See you are still unable to contribute anything worthwhile Mr Grumpy of Totton. Don't you think it is time you got over the fact that the nasty Ted Bates would not pay you when you were a Southampton Colt all those years ago. How about getting behind the team and letting the rest of us know you actually are a supporter.

As for the incidious Invidia - does not take much to make you laugh friend does it. It appears the level of your humour matches your intellect, and how much you support the team. If you really believe I have sufficient power through my posts to divide the fan base I am honoured.

Here I was just thinking I was demonstrating my support for the boys in red and white and hoping we could all get behind them instead of all this constant bickering.

I think what you have done is picked the phrase "dividing the fans" and just thrown it into your posts because it sounded good.

Do you have anything interesting or constructive to say about our team or can you only repeat what the others say.

Despite your insipid allegations and accusations I will keep on keeping the faith, and spreading the word that we have a brilliant bunch of kids playing for us who badly need (and deserve) support.

If that gives you a problem, go and seek some help

Derek gets everything he deserves!

All posters on here care, and that what this little man miss all the time. This guy Derek is a dictator, hypocrite and mad all rolled into one! He has been politely told in many earlier post, and he dose not see it. He attacks people so much, that you will get a reaction, as most on here know more and actually care more than he dose. His only goal on here is to make a name for himself and try and set up a cult following. Have you joined?

Because you scream and shout louder, dose not mean you know or is a better person. Something Derek is been looking for, for many weeks now with attacking crap full of wind most of the time!

Derek of Holbury, Holbury says...

Little man - dictator - hypocrite - mad - mad - attacks people - cult following - make a name for himself - scream and shout - attacking - crap - full of wind.

You have a problem Saint. All the above things are what you think of me, but are actually so far from the truth. There are actually people who agree with me but that is not me saying I think I am great or wonderful, or trying to start a cult following, because that is not what I believe.

Strange how people who accuse me of being rude and attacking people will post something with words like you have used. Also strange how they only seem to come from people who support the Lowe out campaign.

I see myself as nothing more than a passionate fan who is trying to encourage more people to get into SMS and support our team. They need and deserve our support, and the very real fear is that lack of support will ultimately destroy the club.

St.Yorkie, Pocklington says...
9:17pm Tue 2 Dec 08

I find Derek quite balanced in his observations - biased to supporting the team. Nothing wrong with that.
It's a free country - and to date a fairly free forum. Seems to be plenty anti-Lowe & Lowe luvvies regularly have their say.
I think now as a gesture of how desperate the club is for money - never mind £50 - a ticket should be £100. Those who put the going to SMS above what goes on upstairs will gladly part with their money! Especially all those Cockney Reds...come and have a go if you think you're rich enough!!!
