Ipswich dash Saints' hopes of a win

ONE of the biggest crowds of the season at St Marys saw Saints share the spoils with Ipswich Town in a 1-1 draw.

The 23,299 attendance was Saints biggest since Charlton's visit in November though there was little for either set of fans to cheer during the opening 45 minutes.

Nearly 3,000 Ipswich fans made the trek west to watch Jim Magilton's play-off contenders attempt to improve their away form.

But neither side threatened to break the dullest of deadlocks in the first half.

Jhon Viafara put wide an effort at the far post from Inigo Idiakez's cross early on for the home side.

And a ball into the box from Mario Licka also caused some unease in the Ipswich penalty area.

Nigel Pearson ran to the edge of his technical area in protest when Marek Saganowski appeared to be brought down on the edge of the six yard box by young Ipswich left-back Dan Harding.

The Polish striker also had two efforts quickly blocked by the Ipswich back four before Licka, who slotted in on the left of mid-field, won a corner.

Left-sided Ipswich mid-fielder Jonathan Walters over-hit a through ball after capitalising on lost Saints possession as the lack of quality continued.

Saints in-form left-back Gregory Vignal fired high and wide after venturing forward and successive headers behind from the Frenchman late in the first half kept Ipswich at bay.

A wonderfully timed Andrew Davies tackle on Alan Lee also prevented Ipswich from threatening Kelvin Davis in the Southampton goal.

Such was the shortage of quality that neither keeper was called into action until Davis dived to his left to tip David Norris's shot around the post from Pablo Counago's pass.

The second half had sparked into life and two goals in four minutes gave both sets of supporters plenty of reason to test their vocal chords.

Stern John gave Saints a 52nd minute lead with his 14th league goal of the season. The veteran Trinidadian capitalised on Viafara's cross from the right in opening the scoring.

JOHN chested down Viafara's centre and from 12 yards out he fired unerringly into the top left corner of Stephen Bywater's goal.

It was just the start that Pearson wanted but Saints first home goal under their new manager was soon cancelled out.

Within four minutes of going behind, Ipswich equalised through NORRIS, who ventured forward unchallenged after being put through by Lee.

Norris cut in from the right flank and, with his left foot, fired low and hard inside Davis's left-hand upright.

The momentum was with Ipswich and Walters flashed a cross-shot across the face of Davis's goal and beyond the far post before blazing another effort wide on the hour.

Two survivors from the 2005 FA Youth Cup final were introduced as substitutes mid-way through the second half.

Ipswich prodigy Owen Garvan replaced Tommy Miller in the centre of the Ipswich mid-field in the 63rd minute.

And four minutes later David McGoldrick was handed his first appearance under Pearson four minutes later.

McGoldrick nearly made a memorable start to life under his new manager, but missed a glorious chance to restore Southampton's lead in the 69th minute.

Once again, it was a Viafara cross from the right that provided the opportunity and McGoldrick did well to beat his man on the edge of the Ipswich six-yard box. Sadly he could only find the side-netting but McGoldrick's introduction coincided with a concerted spell of Southampton pressure.

John was caught offside as he attempted to beat Bywater and Vignal had a cross headed clear as Saints looked for a second.

Counago was also flagged offside as he had a header blocked by Davis before he too was replaced by another 2005 FA Youth Cup finalist in Danny Haynes.

The chances continued to flow in a much improved second half and John should have restored Southampton's lead with his second after an excellent cross by Vignal.

The Frenchman's outswinging delivery from the left found John unmarked, but the striker failed to hit the target with his free header, nodding wide from ten yards with only Bywater to beat.

Both sides contributed to an exhilirating last ten minutes.

After being caught in possession by Haynes, Vignal recovered to relieve the danger with the help of the rest of the Saints back four.

Within a minute Idiakez had a 20-yard drive pushed over the bar by Bywater following a quick exchange of passes with McGoldrick.

The Spaniard then fired over the bar with his left foot before another potentially disastrous Saints mistake at the other end nearly gifted the visitors the winner.

Following a cross from the right Wayne Thomas lost his footing in attempting to clear but he recovered well and in tandem with Jermaine Wright he snuffed out the danger from Lee.

Idiakez then won a free kick on the edge of the Ipswich penalty area as the match entered three minutes of injury time.

The former Derby mid-fielder stepped up to take the free kick but it was deflected wide.

Then, following a Licka corner, Davies swung his left boot at the ball as it ran loose in the penalty area, but there was no way through Ipswich's back rearguard.

Hearts were in mouths when Lee's cross flashed across the face of Davis's six-yard box.

And after Cedric Baseya had been handed his debut as an injury-time replacement for John, Lee put a header wide.

After listening to the game on the Radio, today was definately a better performance than some of the dross served up in recent months, which must be a step in the right direction. Well done Nigel! However, I would like to see many more performances like today before I even contemplate coming back to St Marys on a Saturday afternoon.

Guys we saw a good game today and the crowd were really behind the team. It was a great all round performance and stay away Steve would have enjoyed the singing. I was once again proud of the team and the individual performances. Now there are two things left to do. The first is make sure you are at all of the remaining home games and the away games if possible to cheer on the team. Finally DO NOT WASTE A MOMENTS BREATH OR KEYBOARDING TIME REPLY TO THOSE NEANDERTHALS FROM DOWN THE M271. The absolute drivel they post on here is not worth reading let alone dignifying with a reply so don’t do it. Corresponding with Skates just ain’t Saintly. Stay clean stay away from Skates.

Amazing how you can bump up attendances when you have a visiting team the bring 3,000 supporters, and you let women in for a tenner!

With some of the dross printed on here by self-proclaimed red and white striped footballing experts, I expect that the women were the ones with the knowledge!

It would be interesting to know how many will be tempted/forced to make another visit!

Good solid performance today, we were unlucky not to win it. I'm impressed with Nigel Pearson, he was shouting instructions to the players every time I looked over at him, I think hes had a positive effect on the team. Fitness levels looked better than usual, we played well to the final whistle, could've nicked a goal at the end.
Well done to everyone who went today, great atmosphere, thats the kind of support we need if we're gonna get a win under our belts and stay up.

Nothing wrong with Jermaine Wright at all; he's a very solid player who was constantly played out of position by 'football genius' George Burley. Apart from Andrew Davies (who's clearly far too good for us), the much maligned Jermaine and Kelvin are probably the only ones from the current bunch of slackers I'd keep.

But at least most of them looked like they had some vague idea of what position they were supposed to be playing in today.

So well done Mr Pearson; shame the board didn't give you more of a chance by appointing you earlier.

A bit better today than recent games. Lack of confidence remains the problem and the usual inability to hold a lead for very long. Some real defensive blunders late in the game that nearly cost us even the one point.

Licka deserves another game. Davies and Thomas were generally solid at the back.

My only real groan: why play Viafara on the right flank instead of Hamill? That made no sense to me at all. Viafara is like a fish out of water on the flank - no pace whatsoever. If you play him ata ll, it has to be central midfield.

Other questions:

Where were Pearce and Surman?

Why doesn't somebody teach Stern John the offside rule?

Where's the movement off the ball?

You're all pathetic.

Back on subject - I'm glad we managed a draw yesterday against a decent Ipswich team. The league table does worry me but we must have enough quality to ensure safety. I have a good feeling about Nigel Pearson, he's in the Tony Mowbray mould and I look forward to a steady improvement with him at the helm.

Anyone who has been watching us this season could see that there is a real improvement in the side. Much more balanced and much better team play. If we can keep the same team playing we will do well.
Really good to see Jermaine play well. He has obviously had better instructions and was backed up by the team. I hate to criticise players playing out of position.
Why do we criticise them when they are covering for players who are permanently injured yet still draw full pay?
Next season out with the deadwood and in with a fully fit team.

They've got to sort this site out now with proper log in's and that. Too many sad skate tw@ts with nothing better to do. What are you trying to compensate for? You do all realise the majority of posts on this site are now from skates? Pathetic.

I thought we played a lot better yesterday. We showed some fight even when we conceded. I thought Davis, Licka and Vignal played well. It was nice to see two youngsters get on the pitch. It was nice to see the manager on the touchline shouting at people! Good atmosphere, good attendance. It was also nice for the sun still to be shining when I left st Mary's! If we play like that every game we shouldn't have any problems, so long as we can find that final pass.

WGS took 4/5 games to get his first win. Pearson is getting the players playing his way and I'm sure the first is not far off. I believe we now have the manager to turn the club around.

Agree michael, although I hope that NP gets that win a bit quicker as we are in a precarious situation. Great game yesterday I thought we were unlucky not to win although Kelvin made a couple of crucial saves.

Ipswich are one of the better sides in this league and if we can perform like that every week, I think we will pick up enough points.

For me, the home games against Coventry and Leicester are now momentous!

Terrible down here ....Pompey Sailor is craving attention as are othe Pompey fans who we give far far to much attention to. Why dont we just ignore them? Every time they post DO NOT RESPOND, pass this message along every time they post.....this board is for Saints Fans not Pompey Fans who crave attention and who probably live alone and have nothing better to do with their lives.

Mathematics never their strongest subject. Perahps they ought to check their own average attendance.
When Stains played at Scumthorpe last week the attendance was 6289. Where was the Stains so called loyal supporters then ? only 250 of your so called massive following went. It Could\'nt have been because the game was televised because we had enough of your SH1TE the week before in that FUKCING boring cup game you lot played in and deservedly lost to a team your be playing next year !
Not only are you not a Saints fan which makes you pathetic for coming on here but your language is disgusting and ignorant. Children could easily log on and read this!! What a sad excuse for a grown-up you are. Get a life.

"all crawled out the woodwork"? Just heard on Radio Five Live, they've brought 200 - 300 up to Everton. 200 and they think they can ridicule Saints for bringing more than three times that number to Scunthorpe. 200 when they have a chance of Europe. That's pathetic.

So what! Pompey were beaten 3 - 1 by a team in the top half-dozen of the Premier League, on their ground!
Not the first time it has happened, and will not be the last!
The difference between Pompey Supporters and Stains Customers is that I am NOT now bellyaching about my Chairman and his directors.
I am NOT demanding that my manager be sacked!
I am NOT moaning about my team's performance in general, or making scathing comments on any in particular!
Compare that with what with thecomments put on here recently about your Chairman, Manager, Players and even YOUR FELLOW CUSTOMERS!

If, as you say, Pompey were 'slaughtered' this afternoon by the score of 3 - 1, would you care to let me know how you would describe the result last time SFC visited FRATTON PARK?
