Real Madrid fan Fernando Alonso will risk upsetting some of his Liverpool-supporting crew by cheering on the Spanish giants inside McLaren’s Monte Carlo motorhome on Saturday night.

Liverpool are bidding to win their sixth European title when they face the might of Madrid in this season’s Champions League final in Kiev.

Alonso, the two-time Formula One world champion, is a lifelong supporter of Madrid, and will watch the showpiece unfold after he has finished qualifying for Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix.

McLaren are Britain’s most successful F1 team, and their staff is made up predominantly of English employees.

“I guess there will be Liverpool supporters in the team and I will find that out on Saturday night,” Alonso, 36, said.

“I am a Real Madrid fan and a Real Madrid member so I hope they can win on Saturday but it is going to be very tight and it will not be straightforward.

“I am in an English team so there will be a lot of mechanics and engineers who support Liverpool, but that is something I will have to deal with this weekend.

“It is going to be an interesting match. They are two of the best teams in Europe – have 17 Champions League titles between them – so it cannot be a better final than this one.”
