ALRESFORD'S fight for Wessex Premier survival
will go right to the wire
after Tuesday's home
defeat in an entertaining
game against Bemerton.
The Magpies travel to
Lymington Town, just two points
above them, on Saturday (3pm)
knowing a win would take them
out of the bottom three and dump
their opponents in a likely relegation
position instead.
On Tuesday night, Alresford lost
Nick Lewis to a back injury in the
pre-match warm-up but started
promisingly. Stuart Findlay almost
scored with a flick-header from
Jake Wigley's free kick, which
Darren Crowfoot saved without
knowing much
about it.
On 37 minutes,
Alresford
took the lead
when Wigley
picked up possession
wide
on the right
and cut inside
to curl a sublime
shot into
the far top corner
with the
outside of his
right foot.
Bemerton had looked dangerous
from set pieces, and they
made that pay when Steve Slade
made space to head goalwards
from a 41st minute corner. Gary
Adams, on the goal-line, could
only tip the ball away with a hand
and referee Dan Berry, who had a
good game, had no option but to
show the defender the red card
and award a penalty. Joe Sanger
made no mistake from the spot.

In the second half, there was
plenty of action at both ends. For
Alresford Joe Hodge and Richard
Lang both impressed in unfamiliar
defensive positions, while at
the other end young striker Jamie
Ross came agonisingly close to
coverting an inviting Wigley cross.
Bemerton's winner came on 80
minutes when Paul Palmer's run
left keeper Dan Chapman on his
backside, and unselfishly squared
for Dan Sullivan to prod home.
