WINCHESTER City coach Andy Darnton was pleased with the performance, if not the result, after this defeat at Bridgwater Town.

Having taken a 37th-minute lead in awkward, blustery conditions, City - convincing 3-0 home winners over the Somerset side two weeks ago - were undone by twice in the second half, but can consider themselves unlucky not to have come away with a point.

"I was pleased with the boys and the way we played," said Darnton.

"We showed a lot of character and determination to try and get back into the game - and we had the opportunities.

" Y o u n g Andy Jacob, who had come on as a substitute, got in behind them, but the ball overran at an acute angle and went behind.

"Richard Gregory also had an opening, but the ball ran away from him and the chance was lost.

"We piled on a lot of pressure in the last ten minutes and, although I'm disappointed to lose, we deserved to get something."

Winchester went ahead from a set-piece - defender Steve Llewelyn nodding the ball down to Brett Williams to hit home.

Gregory could have made it two but was denied by the keeper in a one-on-one, and when City did eventually score' again four minutes into the second half, it was a James Wilson ricochet into his own net from Nat Pepperell's freekick.

Bridgwater's winner came just after the hour when Jacob was dispossessed and Brett Trowbridge scored after a sweet

Frankly, if my head is shaped like a potato (as many claim), I don't see how I could not be considered amply qualified to comment on Winchester's defeat to the mighty Bridgwater.

Look at the final line. It seems Mr Brett Trowbridge scored the winner whilst under the influence of sugar.

Sweet finish, indeed.
