Romsey edged out

ROMSEY Town have the capacity to score a lot of goals in the Sydenhams Premier this season.

But, worryingly, they have the potential to concede them too, writes Wendy Gee.

On Tuesday night Wayne Mew’s men were involved in a high-scoring thriller at Moneyfields – and came away frustrated 6-5 losers.

“We won the second half!” said Mew, pictured, with a wry smile.

“But we were 3-1 down inside 15 minutes and 5-2 down at half-time.

“I’ve got mixed emotions really. Our defending was very poor in the first half, but we did a lot better after the break and Moneyfields admitted they were hanging on for the last ten minutes.

“We hit the post three times during the game and the third time we hit it, through Ryan Long, the score was 6-5.

“To be fair, they also hit the woodwork.

Neither side could defend properly.”

Simon De’Ath (2), Long (2) and Macs Sampays found the net for Romsey, but they were outgunned by Miles Rutherford’s early-season pacemakers who scored through Steve Hutchings (2), Jake Slater (2), Jamie Hore and Dan Gauntlett.

“I don’t think I’ve been involved in a 6-5 before,” said Mew. “Defensively I was pulling my hair out, but the attacking part of our play was very good. We went forward with pace and put five past Dave Hook who’s a very experienced ’keeper.

“Ben White, our new signing from Alton, was our man-of-the-match. He didn’t score, but he had a hand in most of the goals.

“It was disappointing to lose. We probably deserved a point.”

Romsey must learn to keep the back door shut in two home games over the weekend. They host Newport IoW tomorrow (Saturday) and title favourites Winchester City on Monday. Gareth Batchelor and Luke Dempsey hope to be fit after missing the Moneyfields goal fest.
