ROMSEY’S Katie Hickson reinforced her top spot in the Hampshire Cross Country League for under-17 Women by winning the latest race at Popham Airfield, near Basingstoke.
The 16-year-old Mountbatten pupil dominated the race from gun to tape, finishing 17 seconds ahead of her nearest rival, Team Southampton teammate Jenny Beckingham.
Mhairi-Clair Stewart finished sixth to enable Team Southampton to take maximum league points.
In the under-15 girls, Mountbatten’s Frances Arnott finished a very creditable 24th, while Mountbatten's third athlete, Dudley Mason, came fourth in the under-15 boys’ race. Meanwhile, at Eastleigh’s Fleming Park Golf Course, Mountbatten had 40 athletes taking part in the annual Team Cross Country Championships.
Millie Evans produced a sixth place finish in the Year 7 race and she was followed home by teammates Sophie Haig (48th), Grace Oreffo (50th) and Ellla Gale (62nd).
In the equivalent boys’ race, twins Harry and Oliver Adams combined with Tom Farr and Morgan Penn to score well for the team.
In the Year 8 events, Will Hill, Ollie Lerway, Sean Kirkup and Jack Townsend produced the goods for the boys and Stephanie Bottell (10th), Kate Horley (22nd) and Rachel Hiller (25th) did the business for the girls’ team.
Frances Arnott produced another competent performance by finishing 10th in the Year 9 race, followed by Alice Jordan (30th).
James Sampson produced the best individual performance by a boy with his 17th place in the Year 9 race, with Sam Wolstencroft (25th), Scott Wallis (47th) and Daniel Lorenowicz (54th) completing the set.
