FORMER Scotland Rugby Union captain Budge Pountney was guest of honour at Winchester Rugby Club’s 80th anniversary celebrations.
When club captain Campbell Ettinger spoke he made it clear that, although his players were struggling in the league this season, they were determined to emulate their predecessors and take the club back to the heights they had reached in the past.
The celebratory evening opened with a floodlit game to mark Winchester’s very first fixture in 1929 when the old boys of King Edward’s School in Southampton were the opponents.
On that occasion the newly formed City Club beat the Old Edwardians 33-nil but on the 80th anniversary evening the Under-18 side from King Edward’s turned the tables on Winchester’s Colts with a 32-5 victory.
