Hampshire director of cricket Giles White has backed James Vince to establish himself in England’s Test team in New Zealand this month.

Vince made 45 in the two-day day/night friendly against a New Zealand XI, which finished as a draw, ahead of next week’s first Test in Auckland.

White is hoping he can make England’s number three spot his own.

“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with his technique, it’s down to his decision making, which has generally been very good.” said White. “Stats from the Ashes series show he was second to Steve Smith in terms of making the correct decision for each ball. But obviously he has got out and got it wrong.

“Luck can play a part in cricket and James is a mature player and understands he needs to stay in for longer and turn his 30s and 60s into bigger scores.

“Everyone acknowledges he’s a high quality player, he just needs to do it for a little longer. That’s his challenge and there’s no reason why he can’t do that.

“He now has a chance to cement his spot in New Zealand.”
