THERE were several winners from Southampton at the Energise Me Awards 2018 at St Mary’s Stadium.

The annual awards ceremony, run by Winchester-based charity Energise Me, recognises sporting achievements across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

There were 270 nominations, narrowed down to a shortlist of 39, including 16 from the Eastleigh and Southampton area.

Outstanding Achievement Award
Jon Flynn, deputy head teacher at Swanmore Primary School.
In 2015 one of his pupils, Felix, was knocked down by a car and suffered severe injuries.
Felix’s parents set up a charity to help with his ongoing care. Jon ran at least five miles a day from January 1-December 31 to raise more than £8,000 for Fit for Felix and two other charities. He has inspired hundreds of adults and children to run.
Shortlisted: Shadi Ganjavian-Connor (Mountaineering) and Keith Diaper (Triathlon).

Official of the Year 
Hampshire FA referee Kathryn Carver, who was accepted into the Hampshire FA County Centre of Refereeing Excellence and selected to represent Hampshire FA at the Iber Cup in Portugal.

School of the Year
Southampton’s Valentine Primary was rewarded for its commitment to sport and boosting children’s activity levels, including its participation in the Golden Mile and the training of 33 Year 5 ‘Play Leaders’.
Shortlisted: Newchurch Primary and Bishop Challoner.

Junior Sports Person
Shot put star Serena Vincent was recognised for her national and international achievements. Serena is the U17 UK number one indoor and outdoor shot put champion.
Shortlisted: Annie Boby (Judo) and Zachary Lacey (Swimming).

Senior Sports Person 
Golfer Harry Ellis. At 21, he is the third player in history – and the youngest – to win both the English Amateur and the Amateur Championship. He is currently completing a scholarship at Florida State University.
Shortlisted: Kimberley Murray (Skeleton) and Owen Richardson (Athletics).

Active Workplace
Aviva (Eastleigh) runs weekly free activities for staff such as Tai Chi and Yoga as well as walking and running clubs, spa days and also provides a Wellbeing app for staff.

Team of the Year
Acrobatic gymnasts Stephanie Ricketts and Toula Raftapoulou, from Eastleigh, were third at the Junior European Championships.
Shortlisted:Bramshaw Golf Club Junior Team, Winchester Hockey Club U14 Boys.

Service to Sport
John ‘JR’ Robinson has spent an average of 15 hours a week as Winchester RFC’s volunteer groundsman since 1972, when the club moved to its current ground. He continues to maintain and improve the 3.6 hectare site.
