ONE of the greatest and most charismatic jockeys of all time is galloping towards Hampshire.

Fans of the turf are in for a treat when Frankie Dettori, winner of more than 3,000 races, trots out details of his fascinating career at Eastleigh’s Concorde Club on November 15.

It promises to be an evening of humour , anecdotes and chat delivered in the Italian horse racing superstar’s inimitable style.

An Evening with Frankie Dettori includes a question and answer session when race fans will be able to put the legendary jockey over the hurdles.

Dettori has been Champion Jockey on three occasions and has ridden the winners of more than 500 group races.

His most celebrated achievement was riding all seven winners on British Champions Day at Ascot and he has been described by Lester Piggott as the best jockey currently riding.

Dettori is the son of the Sardinian jockey Gianfranco Dettori who was a prolific winner in Italy.

Away from the course, he took part in the 11th series of the reality TV show Celebrity Big Brother finishing seventh on day 21.

Born in Milan, Dettori’s first experience with horses was at the age of 12 when his father bought him a Palomino pony. He left school a year later to become a stable boy and apprentice jockey, leaving for England and Newmarket the following year.

In 1990, Dettori became the first teenager since Lester Piggott to ride 100 winners in one season. Further success followed, with numerous winners in Group 1 races. In September 1996, he achieved the feat of winning all seven races on a single day at Ascot.

In June 2000 Dettori had a miracle escape when the plane he was travelling in crashed. He was injured but lived to the tale, a story from his dramatic life which will unfold at The Concorde.
