SUNDERLAND striker Jermain Defoe can leave the club for free after it was relegated, it has been confirmed.
The Black Cats manager David Moyes told a national news organisation that it is "hard to take" that Defoe, 34, has a relegation clause in his contract.
The north-east side were relegated from the Premier League after a defeat to Bournemouth, courtesy of a late Josh King goal.
Defoe, who has previously played for Tottenham and Portsmouth, has found the net 15 times in the Premier League.
