Mark Vardy targeted his local beach at Lee-on-Solent during a roving shore competition and landed a brace of nice thornback rays.

The Elmore SAC member also hauled in a trio of pouting together weighing 15lb 9oz to take overall victory. After weighing, the rays were returned alive.

Rick Simms was runner-up with a solitary plaice followed by Dave Barnes.

Other species to figure included dogfish, rockling and pout.

Clive Alexander (Southampton) beached his first ever undulate ray while targeting a local beach.

The 13lb 6oz fish took a sandeel/crab cocktail presented on a size 3/0 hook.

Alexander also landed a number of pout, dogfish and small smoothhound during the same session.

A superb specimen 1lb 10oz garfish caught by Andy Mapstone (Christchurch AC B) was the highlight during the first round of the 4-a-side Neptune League series fished along the Warren Edge section at Southbourne.

Dogfish, flounders, plaice, sole and mackerel were also recorded.

The winning team, with 2lb 12oz, were Arron Rabbets, Chris Rogers, Tim Vivian and Mapstone.

Others: 2nd Boscombe & Southbourne SFC 2lb 4.5oz, 3RD Christchurch AC A 1lb 15.5oz, 4th Christchurch & District A 8oz, 5th Christchurch & District B 7.5oz, 6th Loni’s AC 5oz.

The next match in the series will be held on May 8 with fishing from 3.30pm and 10.30pm between the end of the promenade and Hengistbury Head groyne.

A good variety of species including bass, smoothhound, sole, pout, whiting, thornback rays and rockling figured during the Lock, Stock & Tackle midweek catch and release open shore competition fished along the Pyramid section at Southsea.

The night's longest fish was a 57cm smoothhound recorded by Adie Ferguson.

Results: 1st Adie Ferguson 197cm, 2nd Darren Dixon 131cm, 3rd Darren Wilson 76cm, 4th Justin Rouland 75cm.

The Angling Trust Wessex Region Marine stage their Boat Championships on May 20 with fishing out from Langstone. The event should produce some quality fish.

SANDOWN & LAKE AC: Josh Davis took the honours during the latest match held on the local pier with 15lb 7.5oz, his catch included a 13lb 14oz undulate ray.

LYMINGTON & DISTRICT SFC: large boat competition fished in blustery conditions produced a variety of species including undulate rays, dogfish, conger, black bream, plaice, pollack and smoothhound.

Results: 1st Jane Hopkins 107pts, 2nd Derek Smith 92pts, 3rd Robin Lane 80pts, 4th Brian Dawkins 68pts, 5th Malcolm Gerrish 62pts.

CHRISTCHURCH & DISTRICT FC: Small-eyed-rays, pout and dogfish supplied limited action during a shore competition fished along the Whitehouse section at Milford where Keith Mills topped the podium with a 4lb 5.5oz catch of dogfish and a ray.

Others: 2nd Tony Amos 1lb 14oz, 2nd Jeff Summers 1lb 12.5oz, 4th Ted Mann 1lb 9oz.
