Tottonians completed their season with a draw at Brighton RFC and their highest league placing in the club’s history.

Totts’ fourth place finish in London 1 South was guaranteed before the kick-off against their south coast rivals and, with the hosts safely placed above the relegation places following improved performances since the New Year, the sides produced an exciting 29-29 scoreline.

It was also the final game in charge for Tottonians’ coach Gavin Williams and he saw his squad take their chances well against the home team who had the upper hand in possession and territory.

Tottonians trailed at half time but a couple of tries from Josh Andrews and a Pierre Clark conversion kept them in the hunt at 19-12 down.

They got level from a catch-and-drive with Ollie King touching down and went into the lead when Clark split the posts with a 35-metre drop goal.

Back came Brighton with a try as the lead changed hands but Totts regained advantage when Mike Searle crossed in the corner for their bonus point and Clark’s trusty boot again added the extras.

It was all-out defending for Totts from then on and Mike Searle was also sidelined with a yellow card.

Brighton levelled once more and both teams had the opportunity to claim victory – the home side’s conversion hit the posts and Clark’s final long-range penalty attempt just missed the target.

Williams, who has coached at all levels at Totts, said: “I would like to say a big thank you to all the players, coaches and volunteers who have given me so much support and guidance throughout my 20 years as a coach at Tottonians RFC.

“It’s been a huge honour and privilege and I'm proud to have been part of something special. I have no doubt that the players will kick on yet again and take the club to even greater things.”

Havant’s hopes of playing national league rugby next season were thwarted as they lost their final game of the season to runaway winners Sidcup.

The Kent side, who had only lost one game all season, won the clash 43-30.

Runners-up spot, and the play-off place that goes with it, went to Tonbridge Wells who defeated Maidstone 46-14.
