Shirley SAC member Andy King has again landed quality fish while targeting marks off the Needles.

On this occasion he was fishing from the Keyhaven-based boat ‘Sunrise’ skippered by Ray Pitt.

During a fairly hectic session, with a number of species being landed, King used a squid/mackerel bait to tempt a 3lb 2oz specimen whiting.

Jason Springfield (Southampton) also got amongst some quality whiting while fishing off the Needles from his own boat ‘Sea Warrior’.

His catch, which were all taken on mackerel strip, included a 3lb 7oz specimen - another superb fish.

A number of local anglers travelled to the Wexford region of Ireland for the 29th three-day Irish Winter Beach Championship.

There they finished with mixed success with the Daily Echo’s sea angling correspondent Chris Clark (Sway) being part of the four-man winning team. Good measure Just for good measure, he also won his section during two of the three sessions and recorded the longest flatfish during the Championship.

In all, Clark collected over 1,000 Euros for his efforts.

l Fish were conspicuous by their absence during the final round of the Wessex Tackle & Guns Senior Flounder League fished at Baiter and Whitecliffe.

Just two of the 53 competitors returned fish to the scales.

Tony South won with a 12.75oz flattie followed by Nick Bainton with a flounder weighing just 11.25oz.

AROUND THE CLUBS

SOUTHAMPTON SAC: A competition held along the Weston Shore section of Southampton Water attracted 18 members.

They only managed to return seven flounders to the scales with junior members certainly having the upper hand. Juniors: 1st Matt Taylor 1lb 15oz, 2nd Ruby Allen 15oz, 3rd Reece Miller 14oz.T. Seniors: 1st Paul Strange 1lb 10oz, 2nd Mike Brown 1lb 6oz, 3rd Mike Taylor 15oz.

SHIRLEY SAC: Members travelled to Eastney for their latest shore competition where flounders, dabs, dogfish, bass and whiting all figured in the catch.

Results: 1st Robert Cooke 2lb 8oz, 2nd Bob Patterson 1lb 12oz, 3rd Adrian Groves 1b, 4th Pasquale Mucci 12oz, 5th Kevin Dunham 10oz.

HAMBLE SAC: Whiting and pout dominated during a catch & release shore competition fished along the deep water section at Magazine Lane.

Results: 1st Tony Spidgeon 397cm, 2nd Andy Pellatt 302cm, 3rd David Treacher 117cm, 4th Mike Gregory 26cm. l Sea angling and freshwater fishing spotlights appear in the Daily Echo every Thursday.
