EASTLEIGH proved themselves a class act on and off the field, sprinkling the Silverlake Stadium with some FA Cup stardust yesterday.

As well as booking their place in tomorrow evening's draw for the first round proper, they made the magnificent gesture of donating all the gate receipts to their Southern One South & West opponents North Leigh.

A crowd of 889 descended on Stoneham Lane to see the Spitfires – the last non-League team standing in the 2015/16 FA Cup – kick off this season’s campaign with a landslide 6-0 victory courtesy of four-goal former Portsmouth striker Ryan Bird, Andy Drury and sub James Constable.

It wasn't exactly an enjoyable afternoon for the North Leigh players, who had Eric Odhiambo sent off for a second yellow card when 4-0 down.

But the Oxfordshire club were overwhelmed by the generosity of Eastleigh chairman Stewart Donald, who used to play for them and still sponsors them through his company Bridle Insurance.

A North Leigh statement said: “Towards the end of the game, it was announced that the total receipts from the game would be donated to North Leigh by the chairman of Eastleigh FC, Mr Stewart Donald, who is a local West Oxfordshire resident with very strong personal and family connections to the North Leigh chairman Peter King, stretching back over 20 years.

“This wonderful gesture means our total receipts from FA competitions this season will total circa £25k."

Victory pocketed Eastleigh £12,500 from the FA Prize Fund and they now eagerly await tomorrow's draw to be screened live on BB2 and BT Sport at 7.10pm.

The Spitfires, who famously took Bolton Wanderers to a third round replay last season, have been allotted ball No80.

Given the choice, manager Ronnie Moore would love to entertain his old club Hartlepool, but said: “Another home draw against any one of the League teams would be good.”

Giving his verdict on yesterday's slaying of North Leigh, Moore said: “We were slow starting, but once we got the first goal it settled us down a little bit.

“You never know in FA Cup ties, there are shocks and we just said to make sure we weren’t one of them. We were massive favourites to win the game and that can be a hindrance."

With his team 3-0 up and cruising at the break, Moore withdrew defensive titan Reda Johnson, who was “feeling his knee a bit”, with Saturday’s big National League test at Lincoln City in mind.

Johnson’s central defensive partner, skipper Ryan Cresswell, was a surprise starter after a spell out with calf problems, but went off towards the end.

“Cress was feeling the same calf but lower down from where it was,” reported Moore.

“Hopefully it’s just cramp or a bit of fatigue in there.”

Several more familiar Eastleigh names will feature in tonight’s draw with ex-boss Richard Hill’s Whitehawk also through after a 1-0 win at Welling - ex-Spitfire Reece Connolly their fourth-minute scorer.
