Hampshire's destiny will still be in their own hands in the final week of the season - despite Durham securing their first division status in the Specsavers County Championship before next week's visit to The Ageas Bowl.
Ben Stokes took 4-21 as Durham won their penultimate game of the season against Surrey today.
But it is a result that may well work in Hampshire's favour as Durham now have nothing to play for at The Ageas Bowl next week.
Warwickshire are the county in Hampshire's sights. They host Lancashire, the only other team threatened by the last relegation place, at Edgbaston.
Hampshire are eight points behind Warwickshire and 14 behind Lancashire, who drew at home to Championship leaders Middlesex today.
So with a maxium of 24 points available for a win, there is still hope of a second Great Escape for James Vince's side in as many seasons.
Even a draw may be enough next week, but any win should suffice and a 22-point win definitely will be.
