SOUTHAMPTON AC’s rising 100 metres star Oli Bromby has given himself a massive confidence boost ahead of next weekend’s (June 18/19) World Junior Championships trials.

The Shirley-based sprinter can head to the Bedford International Stadium knowing that the 10.45-second WJC qualifying time for Bydgoszcz, Poland, next month is already in the bag.

After the disappointment of discovering his 10.40 win at the Hampshire Championships had been wind assisted, whiz kid Bromby made quick amends.

He finished fourth in a (then) season’s best time of 10.51 seconds at the Loughborough International where he was in the company of GB senior internationals CJ Ujah and James Dasaolu.

Three days later he went to the Lee Valley Sprints Evening where he cracked the WJC qualifying time with a first round run of 10.43.

A good evening became a great one two hours later when he returned for round two and posted a personal best 10.40.

That time ranks 18-year-old Bromby number two under-20 man in the country behind Hercules Wimbledon's Rechmial Miller (10.34).

Gary MacDonald-Gray, who coaches Bromby with his wife Sara, quipped: "He is some competitor - a 25 miles per hour couch potato!"
