James Vince is expected to be named in England's squad for the first Test against Sri Lanka tomorrow morning.

The Hampshire captain will be unavailable for the next Specsavers County Championship match against Nottinghamshire if he makes the cut for England’s opening Test of the summer at Lord’s on May 19.

Hampshire coach Dale Benkenstein believes he is ready.

He said: “Vincey has a lot of ambition with the Test series ahead and I think his game has improved.

“His defence has been good throughout this summer and that has allowed him to be quite consistent.

“We all know what shots he can play and how elegant he looks and that can sometimes be his downfall.

“He is realising that runs are the most important thing and scoring consistently and having the defence he has is allowing him to do that.

“Probably being around the England squad and watching very good players has helped.

“Being consistent and doing the basic things well for a long time is key and he’s probably realising that now.

“He’ll never lose his flair because it’s something he does very well in one-day cricket. But there is a time for it; when he gets to a 100 or we’re in the position to win.

“If he can take that into the rest of his career he will score some big runs."
