Middlesex captain Adam Voges is expected back at the Ageas Bowl to watch his team-mates as he recovers from the blow he took to his head while fielding against Hampshire.

Voges went to hospital with suspected concussion after being hit on the back of the head by a ball ferried back in from the boundary on day one of the Specsavers County Championship Division One match.

He will be unable to take any further part in the fixture, under new safety directives when concussion is suspected, but Middlesex confirmed on their Twitter account that the 36-year-old is well enough to be an interested spectator during the remainder of the match.

An update on Monday morning read: "Adam saw the doctor yesterday, who discharged him from hospital. He is feeling better today but still has a headache.

"Adam will come over to see the rest of the team later today & we will continue to monitor him over the next few days."

Middlesex managing director of cricket Angus Fraser reported the previous evening that the Australian batsman's condition had improved.

"The feeling from our physio was that he's got concussion," said Fraser.

"It's sad for Adam - and obviously disappointing for us, because we're not going to have any more use of him in this game."

Voges, who played for Hampshire in 2007 and has also played for Bournemouth in the Southern Premier League, was hit after taking his eye off the ball, which had gone for four.

Fraser added: "It's a freak injury, as such, but when you see a cricket ball thrown around the field as much as you do, you wonder why it doesn't happen more often.

"They're hard things, cricket balls, and you're not always watching."

Voges was felled by the blow, got to his feet again only very slowly and was still disorientated afterwards.

Fraser said: "He wasn't feeling very well in the dressing room. So we said 'let's get him to hospital to be checked over'.

"But he feels a lot better, seems to be coming round.

"He wants to stay down here and be part of what's taking place, even though he can't do anything on the field."

Hampshire ended day one on 315-7 thanks to a Michael Carberry century.
