TOTTONIANS vice-skipper Ali Ramus powered his way to a hat-trick of tries after making an early return from his injury.

The robust forward helped Totts to a London 1 South bonus point victory at Twickenham after being sidelined for weeks with a bad groin strain.

At one point he did not expect to make a comeback until after Christmas.

The 30-0 win condemned Twickenham to the bottom of the table and kept their Hampshire visitors in a healthy mid-table position.

Signs that the home side’s defence could be breached were obvious from the start – but Tottonians failed to take several chances during the first 40 minutes.

However, they still held the upper hand at half time – Ramus’s first try and one from back Bart van Herwijnen, along with a Robbie Searle penalty, putting them 13-0 up.

And any errors made in the first period were put behind Totts as they turned on the style after the break.

Skipper Robbie Searle set the tone as he dashed from his own 22, only to be stopped two metres short of the line.

Twickenham’s winger was sin binned for an infringement in the tackle.

However, a catch-and-drive from a line-out put Totts 18-0 up as Ramus got his second.

With ten minutes to go Ieuan Williams carried deep into Twickenham’s 22.

His tackler was penalised and after a kick to touch, Ramus duplicated his earlier try which brought up the bonus point.

The best try of the day came when back Pierre Clarke sliced through the Londoners’ defence, passed to Robbie Searle who off-loaded to cousin Mike Searle, who then carved his way past tacklers to score.

Hampshire’s other sides in the league both lost – Gosport & Fareham losing 36-5 at third-placed Medway, with scrum-half Wes Dugan scoring for the visitors, and Havant suffering another close defeat, beaten 22-20 at home by Sidcup.

l Fareham Heathens moved into second place in the Snows Group Hampshire 1 after beating Ellingham & Ringwood 37-17.

Third-placed Millbrook’s game at Locks Heath Pumas was postponed, as was the Sandown v Chineham clash.
