BEN Strevens was the match-winning hero as Eastleigh launched their post-Richard Hill era in spectacular style, inflicting a first home defeat of the season on high-flying Wrexham in the Vanarama National League.

Wes York and Sean Newton had hit back for the hosts’ after goals from Jai Reason and Andy Drury put caretaker boss Chris Todd’s team 2-0 ahead, writes PAUL McNAMARA.

Then, with three minutes to play and the high-flying Welsh team seemingly in the ascendancy, Strevens - just back from a three-match ban - met Joe Partington’s terrific right-wing delivery to head past home ‘keeper Cameron Belford and secure a stunning 3-2 victory for his team.

Prior to Reason’s strike it had been all Wrexham. York and Robbie Evans had the pick of the early chances, but both Dragons men were denied by Spitfires stopper Lewis Noice.

On 20 minutes, Eastleigh dished out a sucker punch.

Lee Cook teed up Reason, whose drilled shot caught a heavy deflection off Jamal Fyfield, who would be dismissed in stoppage time, on its way into the bottom left corner of goal.

Manny Smith then headed inexplicably off-target from six-yards, so adding to the hosts’ chagrin five minutes before the break, when Drury beautifully rounded off a stunning Eastleigh counter.

Cook fed the midfielder 25 yards from goal, leaving him to unleash a sumptuous first-time strike that dipped late, leaving Belford helpless.

The action came to the boil on 54 minutes, when Connor Jennings slipped a pass through for York to slide a finish under Noice to halve the hosts’ deficit.

Vose had a 25-yard strike rattle the upright, with Noice then required to keep out substitute Lee Fowler’s freekick.

The home comeback was complete on 75 minutes, however, as Newton steamed onto Smith’s deep right-wing cross, to head beyond Noice.

But the Dragons had not reckoned on Strevens' dramatic, late intervention as elated Eastleigh brought their winless five-game league run to a close.
