James Vince admits Hampshire are on a revenge mission against Lancashire in tomorrow’s T20 Blast semi-final - a year after last season’s Edgbaston humbling.

Hampshire’s defeat at the hands of Lancashire last August was their third Edgbaston semi-final defeat in four years – and the most emphatic of the lot.

It started so well with Will Smith taking 3-15 as Lancashire were restricted to 160-5 after losing the toss.

But Jimmy Adams’ 53 was the only score higher than ten as Hampshire were skittled for 101 in 14.1 overs.

Vince said: “You look forward to Finals Day as soon as you qualify so it was disappointing to lose like that.

“Getting to a final and winning it is a great feeling and hopefully we can do it again this year.”

Hampshire are aiming for their third T20 title win in six years following the 2010 and 2012 wins at The Rose Bowl and Cardiff.

But their record in their three Finals Day appearances at Edgbaston is poor. In 2011 they lost a thriller to Somerset, with Shahid Afridi distraught after failing to produce the goods with bat and ball in the Super Overs.

And they lost by four wickets to Surrey in 2013.

But Vince scored an unbeaten 66 when Hampshire won their 2010 quarter-final against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

And most of the squad know what it is like to win the T20 title. There are six survivors from the 2010 team and seven from 2012 in tomorrow’s squad.

Vince is one of four players - along with Jimmy Adams, Danny Briggs and Sean Ervine - to have played at all of Hampshire’s six Finals Days.

He said: “We’ve got a similar crop of players bar a couple of senior guys who have moved on. And the youngsters we’ve had for the last few years have gained in experience.

“We’ve got a lot of options so I’m confident we can go there and win it.”

As they have done on their three previous visits to Edgbaston, Hampshire will be playing in the second semi-final (2.30pm).

“It doesn’t matter when you play, if you win the first semi you have a breather and if you win the second you’re on a roll going into the final,” added Vince, who also revealed there will be no superstitious nonsense as Hampshire bid to end their Edgbaston duck.

“We tried all that sort of stuff - we changed the hotel last time but we’re back at the one we used to stay at this year!”

With the weather forecast good, Hampshire are sure to bat first should they win the toss. “We’re a better side when we bat first, “ added Vince, who only needs 14 runs to overhaul Gloucestershire’s Michael Klinger as the competition’s top scorer this season.

Following his maiden T20 century in the quarter-final against Worcestershire he only needs another 37 runs to overhaul the 677 made by Jason Roy last year - the most by one player in a county season.

But it will not be easy against a Lancashire side set to include England’s Jos Buttler, a former teammate of Vince and Briggs for their West of England age group.

“They’ve got some strong players in great touch in Ashwell Prince and James Faulkner and Jos is one of several match-winners," added Hampshire's captain.

“But we beat them in the quarter-finals two years ago and it only takes one guy to win you a T20 game.”
