Former Saints defender Dan Harding, who has been playing for Eastleigh during pre-season, is on trial with Scunthorpe United.
The 31-year-old has turned out for the Spitfires in two games as they warm up to the Vanarama National League kick off next weekend at Southport.
Harding, who is one of a number of options manager Richard Hill was looking at to bring in, played a full game in a 2-1 win over Notts County last night for the League One side.
"Dan will play on Friday night and we will take it from there,” Iron boss Mark Robins said.
“Something came up that suited us and which allowed us to get him in and to have a look at him and hopefully we can do that on Friday.
“We will see what happens after Friday’s game but whether it is directly after that or not I can’t say."
