YORKSHIRE seamer Moin Ashraf could not prevent a seven-wicket Second Eleven Trophy defeat in his first game of a one-month trial with Hampshire.

The 23-year-old conceded 50 from nine wicketless overs as Hampshire failed to defend 239 on The Ageas Bowl’s Nursery Ground.

Bradford-born Ashraf made his first-class debut for Yorkshire in 2010 and last played for his home county in 2013.

He has taken 43 first class wickets at 29.5 apiece.

Hampshire director of cricket Giles White said: “Moin is on loan with us to play in the Second XI to start with, just to strengthen our depth of bowling.

“He’s found himself not playing First XI at Yorkshire and they’ve allowed him to come here and play some second team cricket so it’s a great fit for us.

“He’s a player that’s got a lot of skill and this gives us the chance to have a better look at him. If things work out and if there’s an opportunity in the First XI then Moin’s here and available to give us options.”

Ashraf took a catch as Basil Akram (8.5-1-43-2) took two of the three wickets to fall. James Tomlinson (6-2-21-0) was the most economical of the Hampshire bowlers as Surrey reached their target with 8.1 of the 50 overs to spare.

Brad Taylor (66) top scored for Hampshire and put on 96 with Sean Terry (46) after Tom Alsop (19), Joe Weatherley (15) and Lewis McManus (five) fell in quick succession at the top of the order against a Surrey attack including Jade Dernbach (10-2-46-2).
