James Vince’s England debut was abandoned because of rain, but he is already preparing for another first - captaining Hampshire in the LV County Championship.

Hampshire’s limited-overs captain took a catch at first slip before the one-day international against Ireland in Dublin was abandoned because of rain, with the hosts 58-4.

Now, with Jimmy Adams on paternity leave (his wife, Donna, is expecting their second child any day) Vince will make his first-class captaincy debut against Yorkshire at Headingley tomorrow.

Sean Terry will come into the side to replace Adams - and wicketkeeper-batsman Lewis McManus, 20, is likely to make his debut in place of Adam Wheater, who suffered an ankle injury in training yesterday.

“If it had been a one-day game we’d probably have gone for Tom Alsop but you need the better keeper over four days and Lewis is not far off being a top-order batter,” said Hampshire coach Dale Benkenstein.

Kolpak Edwards, 33, provides more firepower in the continued absence of injured overseas signing Jackson Bird, who is hoping to make his debut against Worcestershire on May 31.

It will be the former West Indies star’s first first-class match since April 2014.

“We’ll see how Fidel pulls up,” added Benkenstein. “He looks ok, is keen to play and his record is pretty self explanatory, but there are a few question marks. We’ll know more after the game.

“It’s a good opportunity for him in his career at the moment and he understands that.”

Yorkshire’s England quartet - Jonathan Bairstow, Adam Lyth, Liam Plunkett and Adil Rashid - are all set to make their first Championship appearance of the season after returning from the Caribbean.

Benkenstein added: “That could be a good thing for us. A lot of them have been away for a long time without playing and we’ve gained a lot of confidence from the last few games, going pretty much toe-to-toe with some very big teams.”

Meanwhile, Ireland’s former Gloucestershire coach John Bracewell will be working with young Hampshire spinners Mason Crane and Brad Taylor later this summer.

“Those two have got real quality and Chalks (director of cricket Giles White) and I could also do with a few hours to pick John’s brains,” said Benkenstein, who was also interviewed for the Ireland post.

He added: “It was great to know people have that confidence in me but the time wasn’t right for me.

“It would have been an out-of-season role, I’m very happy here.”
