DANI King’s cycling comeback ended in victory with a stage win of the Tour of the Reservoir in Northumberland.

The 24-year-old Olympic gold medallist, who comes from Hamble, was racing this weekend for the first time in five months.

Last November she suffered eight broken ribs and a collapsed lung in a crash during training in Wales.

A cyclist hit a pot hole covered by a puddle bringing down several fellow riders, including King, who had another cyclist land on her.

The traumatic incident saw the London 2012 team pursuit champion consult sports psychiatrist Dr Steve Peters – who has worked with stars such as Ronnie O’Sullivan and Steven Gerrard – before returning to racing.

And Saturday’s event saw the Wiggle Honda rider beat fellow Briton Katie Archibald in a sprint finish to win the opening race in the 2015 Women’s Road Series “I’m so happy to have won after everything that’s happened,” King told the BBC after the race.

“I wanted an aggressive race and had planed to attack, but Katie went so early I knew I’d have to go with it.”
