World number one Simon Roberts triumphed in the first ever touchtennis event in Southampton.

Roberts beat second seed Alex Bull, 4-3, 4-1, in the final at the city’s David Lloyd centre.

Bull did taste victory in the doubles final, along with Rob Crouch, as they beat Rob Burrows and Sam Stokoe.

Sharon Fitton claimed the women’s title, beating Christine Horne in the final, 4-1, 4-0.

‘touchtennis’ involved a reduced-size court, with foam balls and 21-inch racquets, to promote long rallies and clever angle play.

More than 100 matches were played throughout the day in the World Tour event, which was the last before the upcoming grand slam competition in Belgium.

Sophie Pink, who organised the event and refereed it, said: “Not many people know about this fun and enjoyable sport.

“My goal is to help grow the game, not only in Hampshire but across the UK.”
