Some great cod continue to be taken from marks off The Needles with a number of heavyweights recorded.
Eastleigh’s John Pickering reeled in a 27lb specimen, while Romsey’s Jo Robinson heaved a 25-pounder over the gunnels, writes CHRIS CLARK.
Most of the big cod and whiting currently being taken from the Needles are falling to treble squid baits presented on large pennel rigs. With the chance of bagging yourself a 30lb-plus fish this is a good time to check out your local charter fleet. Eastney was the setting for the first round of the new Allan’s Marine Super League midweek catch-and-release series where competitors found some brisk action; dominant species where whiting, pout and dabs.
The night’s heaviest fish was a 14oz dab recorded by Dave Edwards from Fareham.
Results: 1 Ian Golds 19lb 12.5oz, 2 Peter Farrell 16lb 10oz, 3 Nick Hayter 15lb 10oz, 4 Duncan Beck 10lb 3.75oz, 5 Adrian Carter 9lb 6oz.
Competitors sampled some above average sport during the penultimate round of the Wessex Tackle & Guns Flounder League fished along the Baiter section of Poole Harbour where Andy Mitchell collected the £87 top prize after recording five flounders weighing 6lb 11oz.
The sweep for the heaviest fish was won by Brian Fooks with a flattie which tipped the scales down to 2lb 4oz.
Results: 1 Andy Mitchell 6lb 11oz, 2 Pete Smith 4lb 13.25oz, 3 Luke Matthews 4lb 9oz, 4 Dan Jenner 4lb, 5 Dennis Holton, 6 Llyod Symes 3lb 12oz.
