HAMPSHIRE racing driver Dean Stoneman heads to Abu Dhabi for the motor racing season’s finale tomorrow, hoping to help Lewis Hamilton complete a unique British hat-trick.

As Hamilton prepares to vie with teammate Nico Rosberg in Sunday's Formula One decider, Stoneman is focused on his own head-to-head on the same Yas Marina circuit with fellow Brit Alex Lynn in the GP3 Championship.

Stoneman could be part of a rare British treble as the GP2 Series has already been won by Jolyon Palmer.

The odds are against him. He will need to take maximum points from the two races and hope that Lynn finishes outside the top ten to pip his rival to the title.

But Stoneman has already overcome cancer and won four races this season despite its debilitating after-effects.

And he will be racing on his favourite circuit, where he already has a course record, and in the Koiranen car in which he won 43 points - the biggest total by any GP3 driver this season – when he drove it for the first time this season in Sochi last month.

“Alex is 47 points ahead and there are 48 points to be had so it will be tough, but all the pressure is on him - there’s none on me,” says the 24 year-old from Bishops Waltham.

“Even if I pick up nothing the worst I can do is finish fourth overall.”
