Eastleigh are back in pole position in London 3 South-West after toppling opponents Old Tiffinians with a 29-13 win.

The writing was on the wall early on for the visitors – wing Jack Curtis getting on the end of a perfect crossfield kick from Phil Baldwin to score in the corner.

Both sides struck with penalties before a serious knee injury to Old Tiffinians’ fullback meant the match was switched to another pitch where Baldwin struck with another penalty for an 11-3 half-time lead.

Eastleigh’s Rich O’Donnell was given a ten-minute rest on the sidelines with a yellow card and Tiffinians grabbed three points from a penalty.

Second row Russell Smith crossed in the corner and Baldwin converted and then added a penalty as Eastleigh kept control.

Curtis’s second try of the day came from another Baldwin crossfield kick which was caught by captain Paul Fudio and fed to the winger.

Another penalty kept the home side well in front but Tiffinians did have the final say as their attacks led to a penalty try.

Delighted Eastleigh coach Andy Boyes said: “We put in our best performance of the season today. It was a total team effort; our defence in last ten minutes epitomised that completely.

“Old Tiffinians’ only try of the game came from a penalty try; they never crossed our line.”

He added: “Congratulations to wing Tyson Peters and flanker Richard Stroud who both had first team league debuts.

“I’ve no doubt that Old Tiffinians are a good side but I felt we had the upper hand today and deservedly won, the late penalty try made the score look closer than the game really was.

“We send out best wishes to the Old Tiffinians full back and wish him a speedy recovery.”

Eastleigh’s man of the match was hooker Nick Blake.

Trojans had the lion’s share of attacks in the opening stages of their clash at Old Mid-Whitgiftian – despite suffering the late withdrawal of centre Edouard Whyte who pulled up with a hamstring in the warm-up.

However the visitors failed to take their chances and only had a penalty to show for their efforts as they were beaten 42-3.

Trojans were still in the game at half time despite allowing OM’s Number 8 to score a bizarre try when he ran from well inside his own half to score under the posts with no opposition and no support.

Trojans fell further behind from the kick-off as OMs went straight through the defence to score after just 29 seconds.

The rest of the half followed a regular pattern with Trojans putting in a number of good attacks, particularly by the forwards, but were unable to cross the line.
