UNSTOPPABLE. That was how the shock winner of a handicapped tournament at the Southampton University Snooker & Pool Club was described.

Mike Andrews, a second year mechanical engineering student, defeated former England universities skipper Tom Foley not once but twice to win the double elimination event.

“It was some of the best snooker I’ve ever played,” declared the 19-year-old.

Tournament organiser Anu Higgoda said: “He was unstoppable.”

Andrews, from St Albans, Herts, increased his high break from 23 to 50 in less than two months last year and was selected for the first team at the 2014 British Universities & Colleges Sport championships in Leeds.

The club was delighted to welcome back alumni Foley and Paul Tavender, who now turn out for Super League outfit Park Gate RBL B and produced much of the eye-catching play on the day.

Foley conceding a one-frame start and a 14-point handicap went out 3-0 to Andrews in the final.

After pocketing his £40 prize money, Andrews said: “I was really happy with my long pots and I’m hoping to continue this good form throughout the rest of the year.

“I can’t wait for the next tournament.”

Another impressive performance came from 20-year-old Jasper Dunning, from Epsom, who knocked out the strongly-fancied Higgoda and was just a troublesome pink along the cushion away from meeting Foley for a place in the final.
