Tegan Paynter has become Waterside Taekwondo Club’s first national champion.

The ten-year-old, from Totton, knocked out all her opponents to win gold at the British National Championships, in Manchester.

She won the final 12-0 in the first round, with a crunching axe-kick on the nose finishing the bout.

The win capped a memorable week for Tegan, who had earlier been selected as the best fighter by Olympic gold medallist Jade Jones at a sparring session held by the club, which 130 athletes attended.

Waterside also celebrated three bronzes at the nationals, courtesy of Maisy Cook, Great Britain cadet squad member Ella Barnes, and Kimi Barnes.

Millie Green and Sean Neill also went close to the medals, after reaching the quarter finals.

Master Colin Graves, who is taking his charges to the Yorkshire Open in two weeks, said: “It’s been a fantastic weekend from the students.

“They have trained so hard over the summer. They inspire everyone who trains at the club.

“Tegan Paynter especially deserves her gold medal, as she fights with the most wonderful techniques you will ever see and she will certainly go on to play a big part in the future of Great Britain Taekwondo, as she is that good.

“I’m very proud of everyone associated with the club.”
