Matty Tew has landed a glamour fight at the O2 Arena that could lead him to a prestigious professional title.

The 31-year-old Southampton lightweight will face Tommy Martin in an English title eliminator on Saturday, October 11.

It will be on the undercard of Olympic gold medallist Anthony Joshua’s world title fight against Denis Bakhtov, with the event in London being screened by Sky Sports.

The contest gives Tew the chance to bring to an end a disappointing 18 months in which he lost a title fight to Santiago Bustos in Southampton and was eliminated early in Prizefighter.

He has returned with two low key wins but has been desperately hoping that something big will come his way, and now it has.

Tew’s trainer, Wayne Batten, said: “This is a big opportunity for Matty and one he is really looking forward to.

“We have been working on trying to get him another shot at a title and an English title eliminator is a great chance for him to show what he can do. It is also in an incredible venue, on a massive bill with Anthony Joshua and hopefully he will get some exposure on Sky as well.

“Tommy Martin is a prospect and so we won’t take him lightly. We will be working really hard to make sure Matty is fully prepared to get in the ring and perform at his best.

“We are just really excited that he has this chance.”

The contest will certainly be no walk in the park for Tew.

Martin is seen as an up and coming talent, and his promoters hope this is the first step on the ladder for a successful career in boxing.

The 20-year-old is being fast tracked for the top having already secured nine wins in nine fights in less than two years as a pro.

Before that fight Batten is taking a trip to Russia.

He has been training welterweight David Avanesyan, ranked eighth by the WBC, in his Southampton gym for the past few months.

Avanesyan, who Batten has also had sparring Kell Brook up in Sheffield as well as with Chris Eubank Jnr, has landed a fight on the undercard of Roy Jones Jnr’s latest bout and will be taking the Southampton trainer with him to work his corner for the contest.

The fight is due to take place in Krasnodor on September 26.
