Stoneham’s Alan Mew produced a performance to be proud of, as he helped England win bronze in the European Senior Men’s Team Championship.

The 61-year-old represented his country at the tournament in Poland, forging a formidable foursomes partnership with Northumberland’s Tony McLure.

England qualified for the quarter-finals after finishing second in the 36-hole stroke play section, before beating Switzerland 5-0, with Mew and McLure securing a 3&2 win in the foursomes contest.

The duo also got England off to a fantastic start in the semi-final against Ireland, winning the morning foursomes at the 19th hole, but they could only watch as the Irish rallied in the afternoon singles to earn a 3-2 victory.

Mew and McLure kept up their undefeated run in the third-place match, though, triumphing 2&1, as they helped secure a 4-1 success over Scotland.

It is the third year in succession that England have come home with bronze from the championship.

Mew is due to be in action for his country again next week, as the Seniors Home Internationals take place at North Berwick, in Scotland.
