Eastleigh have captured their sixth summer signing with the addition of Matt Fry on a free transfer.

The 23-year-old left sided defender follows the arrival of Paul Reid, Craig Stanley, Jack Midson and James Constable at the Silverlake Stadium as well as the return of striker Ben Wright, who was on loan at the Spitfires from Salisbury City at the end of last season’s scoring 13 goals as they won the Conference South.

Fry had signed for Chelmsford City – where former Spitfires captain Glen Southam now plays – with the announcement of his arrival being made last Friday on their official website.

He appeared on Saturday for the Conference South outfit in a goalless draw with Bath City on Saturday.

But just three days later has put pen-to-paper at Eastleigh.

Chelmsford released a statement on their Twitter feed, it said: “having only signed on Friday, Matt Fry has left the club for a team in the Conference.”

He links up with a team high on confidence after going unbeaten in their opening three games and sit fourth in the Vanarama Conference Premier.

The former West Ham youth player will likely fill in for Michael Green after the left back was sent off in the 2-2 draw with Gateshead on Saturday and, presumably, provide competition across the backline.

Fry has been at a series of clubs after his Hammers contract was cancelled by mutual consent in January 2012, allowing him to find regular football elsewhere.

Since then he’s played for Gillingham, Charlton Athletic, Bradford City and Dartford.

He made 15 appearances for Darts last term after joining in June 2013, but was released in January after an injury plagued spell.

Following a brief club-less period he joined Concord Rangers, making seven appearances at the end of last term as they finished 9th the Conference South.

During his time at Upton Park he was sent on loan to the Gills in 2009/10, making 11 appearances, and Charlton Athletic, where he played 25 games in 2010/11.

He then made six appearances at Bradford in 2011/12 before moving on to Dartford.

The ex Gravesend & Northfleet youngster was training with newly promoted League Two side Luton Town, before moving to Chelmsford and now Eastleigh.
