Wellow Tennis Club’s very active summer season is gradually drawing to a close with some positive performances.

Pride of place goes to the team competing in Division 3 of the Apsley League. In their latest match Wellow beat key rivals Riverside B 6-2, maintaining Wellow’s 100 per cent record. Frances Arnott was the star performer for Wellow, who need just one more victory from their last two matches to guarantee the title and promotion.

In the Sarum league Wellow’s C team finished their fixtures in Division 2 with a 5-3 away win at Penton A. The C team finished with only one loss in 12 matches this season to gain the title and win promotion. Cathy Tarvin and Simone Arnott have been the mainstay of the team. In the top division Wellow’s A team ended their season with two narrow defeats against Andover A and Andover B. Wellow ended the season with 13 points from 12 matches and in a comfortable fourth place.

Meanwhile Wellow’s B team had a vital win away at Downton to take them to 7 points which puts them 3rd from bottom. Downton are certain to be relegated but Andover B need at least two points from their remaining matches to condemn Wellow B to relegation.

In Division 3 Wellow’s D team have secured 5 points to ensure they don’t finish bottom.

In Wellow’s latest club tournament, 18 members turned out on a hot and humid afternoon.

In the ladies’ final, Jane Capper and Cathy Tarvin had a convincing 6-2 win against Simone Arnott and new club member Jan Turner.

The Men’s final was more drawn out, with Glen D’Mello and Steve Pugh triumphing in an excitingly close match against Faan du Toit and Paul Goodman.

Wellow’s ladies’ vets team had mixed fortunes in their last two matches of the season. Away on the very unusual courts at Sarisbury Green Wellow lost two championship tiebreaks to lose the match the match 3 -1.

Wellow’s final match, against local rivals Romsey B, saw them secure their second 8-0 win this season.

The men’s vets have had less success, losing out on sets against Lee-on-Solent. This result almost certainly means relegation for Wellow.

The over 55s fared better against Alverstoke thanks to two comfortable wins by first pair Mike Bevan and John Moret and a good win by second pair Andy Wheeler and Dave Pinch.
