CHESS: This year’s British chess championships were held at Aberystwyth University and the Open section was won jointly by David Howell and Jonathan Hawkins.

Local interest saw four current Southampton Chess League players – Jasper Tambini (Southampton University), Martin Simons (Eastleigh Rail) and Martin Clancy (Ringwood) – win 5.5, 5 points and 3.5 points respectively in the Open section. Former Southampton University player Alistair Hill, whose grade has gone up 100 points in 11 years. won 5.5 points in the Open section.

Oliver Gill finished fourth equal in the Major Open with 6.5 points, while in the Seniors Chris Bellers (Salisbury) and Gillian Moore (Southampton) won 3.5 and 2 points respectively in a 7 round contest. John Carr (Portsmouth) obtained 2.5 points out of 5 in the under-130 grading section of the Seniors championship.
