A sharp exit for Saints' Billy

Billy Sharp will be handed a free transfer by Saints.

The 28-year-old striker, who joined for £1.8m in January 2012 but has had a string of loan spells, will be allowed to leave St Mary’s for nothing if he receives a suitable offer this summer.

Sharp has returned to Saints for pre-season training in good shape and good spirits, and has impressed new manager Ronald Koeman. However, the Dutchman doesn’t feel that Sharp is going to figure in his plans for the new Premier League season.

As a recognition of his commitment to the club and his effort, Saints are prepared to waive any potential transfer fee to allow Sharp the chance to move on and further his career elsewhere if he gets an offer he wishes to pursue.

Sharp was signed by Nigel Adkins at the very end of the transfer window in January 2012, the pair having previously worked together at Scunthorpe.

The striker, who started his career at Sheffield United, was recruited to provide extra firepower as Saints tried to press home their advantage and secure promotion from the Championship.

He delivered exactly that as Sharp plundered nine goals in just 15 appearances to help Saints climb back into the Premier League.

However, his joy was short lived as promotion proved to be the death knell for his chances at Saints.Since then Sharp has been overlooked by successive managers, figuring just twice for Saints in the top flight.

He spent the 2012/13 season on loan at Nottingham Forest before last season splitting his time between Reading and Doncaster.

It is understood that a number of clubs have already enquired about Sharp’s availability and the news that he could leave on a free is sure to trigger a rush to secure his services before the transfer window closes.

Sharp’s career stats show a striker who has scored 146 goals in 341 appearances while even at Saints, where chances have been limited, he has notched ten goals in 18 appearances.

Even with Sharp out of the reckoning, and Rickie Lambert also sold this summer, Koeman has a few striking options at his disposal.

Graziano Pelle is likely to start the season leading the line with Sam Gallagher and Emmanuel Mayuka also in the squad.

Last season’s top scorer, Jay Rodriguez, could also be considered for the role when he returns from injury.

I never could understand why he was not given a chance in premiership more. But then I'm not a football manager. Anyhow what ever the future brings good luck. You have always conducted yourself impeccably and are a gentleman and a very decent human being. All the very best to you and your family.

Agreed. Billy Sharp did a great job for us and we should all wish him well for the future - nice that the club is giving him a 'free.' However, lack of goals still worries me; Gallagher, in my view, has a long way still to go, Mayuka cannot really be looked upon as a reliable source and Jay will need time. I read that Samaras is of interest and I think we could do worse. He has premiership experience and appears, like most of the Greek players, to have a strong team ethic; just need to work on his consistency and he could prove to be a bargain signing. Whatever the outcome, we need more firepower.

Everything has been said by the poster and I agree but I do have some sympathy towards him, as the Football Managers expression goes The Deceitful One didn't fancy him and neither does Ronald Koeman, I wonder what is missing from Billy that determines his destiny, he played in some of the friendlies and was given a squad number, I will watch with interest his progress, perhaps now that Reading are more financially sound Nigel would like him back as he got Billy to Southampton and had him again at Reading but finances prevented Nigel from keeping him however that's changed and Billy won't cost another Club any fee.

Agree wholeheartedly with the comments already posted but sad for billy that he wasn't given a run in the Premiership. From the comments made it seems he has been committed to proving himself pre-season. He was one of the players that got us into the "elite" and we desperately need cover in the striker department but I'm confident that Koeman knows what he is doing . Good luck Billy whoever signs you gets a great competitor.

Shame as he is a top bloke and really wanted to stay. Just another player going and no one coming in! I would have thought they wod want to keep him as we are not exactly over burdened with strikers!
Another week gone by and no additional cover in for our vulnerable positions. I can't see it happening now and can see this season is going to be a difficult one for the team and it's supporters. Meanwhile they are probably already a deciding on directors dividend payments based on the 60m they got from the PL and the 70m left over from player sales. I have no confidence on this board at all as they just feed as lies all the time and never deliver on what they say.

By all accounts Billy is a real gentleman and it's a sensible and generous move by Saints to grant him a free. If it had just been one manager who had said he won't make the transition we might have been thinking differently but when two say it they must be right. Seems his level is in the championship and I hope for his sake and that of his family he can put these few years behind him and find a good club in the championship to earn his keep. Good luck Billy wherever you ply your trade.

Good luck Billy! Top man and a very good player, unfortunate he didn't make the step up. No criticism of billy but this is a another example of NC cockup /overspend. For the last two seasons we have had a player we didn't want/use out on loan trying to recoupe part of his wages. The reason he is on a free Is his salery is so high no one will both buy him and pay the same amount of salery so billy will turn down any sale. We had the same last season with Bernard and Fount . Contracts can be very one sided ! As I say this I s not a criticism of billy but a fact of life. We will be very lucky if we don't have the same with osvaldo !

Spot on comment. He came to us just after his wife lost a baby. Scored goals and helped us get promotion. A 100% old fashioned pro-footballer and striker. Probably, just not quite quick enough for the PL and his style of play was against him. Great goal scoring record, quite capable of helping a Championship team gain promotion.

GOOD LUCK BILLY. I don't think that Billy has really been given a fair crack of the whip since we got back in the Prem.
It seems a bit strange that a couple of days ago he was given a number in the SAINTS squad for this season-NO 30- and then 2 days later he is surplus to requirements.
Just further ammunition for those who think that the club isn't been run as well as it could be.
It would be a nice gesture if Sharp gets a run out against Leverkusen but I Can't see it happening.
Hopefully though it will be a cracking match and Saints get another victory ahead of the thrashing they are going to give Liverpool next weekend.

He was on the pitch for about 3 min
I wonder if it had been Barcelona or Real Madrid ,would they have been thrown out
Plattini and his cronies are just as corrupt as Blatter and his lot

Agreed. Billy Sharp did a great job for us and we should all wish him well for the future - nice that the club is giving him a 'free.' I read that Samaras is of interest and I think we could do worse. He has premiership experience and appears, like most of the Greek players, to have a strong team ethic; just need to work on his consistency and he could prove to be a bargain signing. Whatever the outcome, we need more firepower.
Samaras!!!! Celtic fans are pleased to see the back of the lazy good for nothing and having watched his half hearted and petulant displays a few times since moving up here I can see why.
leave him to the bhoys, he is not PL standard

I am really surprised we haven't had one or two more from them - I wonder if Rambo has had a gentleman's agreement with them not to go back and have them over. Or maybe he thinks they are just not good enough for the PL.

Currently in Scotland on business and the press are saying that we only offered 6m for Forster and Celtic have turned down the offer as they are looking for 8m. This looks like another signing slopping through the net as we see to have a philosophy of selling high and buying low. Can't see any further signings now unless they provide more realistic offers. Hands up anyone that thinks Reed knows what he's doing!

COME ON YOU SAINTS ONWARDS AND UPWARDS
Well spotted, it does smack of dithering. Bit like directors being appointed and then unappointed within 24 hours, strange way to run a business.

I thought Billy should have been given a chance when we first came up and it looked like he was going to get a go now. Many said Rickie Lambert wouldn't cut it in the Championship but he ran away with it and went on to become an international as well as a Prem player and it looks like a CL player too.

I believe what determines Billys destiny as a footballer is one of the things that has ruined football today and thats dishonest. Honesty used to be the best policy but not these days. Look how honest Ricky Lambert was as a player through the years and banging in goals for fun. Yet look how long it took people to take notice. Look how many years it took for people to take real notice of Le God. When the penny dropped that he was a legend and should play for England it was time for him to retire. Im not one of the people who say football managers like Poch and Ronald know best because I dont think they do. Its the same as anythibg else these days its not what you know its who you know and thats the dishonest thing. Sharp was class and his football and goals did the talking. However Poch preferred Osvaldo and Koeman prefers Pelle as he knows him! I think had we had Billy upfront with Ricky and J Rod the last two seasons we would of won more games. Best of luck Billy your record speaks for itself.

BS was a good Championship player but not Premiership quality.
Eddie Howe should come in for him, but expect Nigel Adkins will.

We must score at least 20 more goals next season yet we have one of the weakest strike force in the division.

We needed a top CB before Lovren was sold now we are desperate for TWO.

It appears Morgan still wants out because we have not signed any established top quality players to convince him to stay.

Whilst we hear the board are working hard, they have brought this situation on themselves. They should have bought a couple of top quality players first before selling any.

It looks we are wasting our time with Celtic's two & Rojo so need to get a couple of top signings asap.

QUESTION - How much help is Les Reed getting ? With 5 top players required it will need much more time than he has got left !

The Board are doing their best in diificult circumstances and I think the majority of fans support them in their efforts to strengthen the team.

Pelle is our main man and we've got J Rod to come back. We don't need to sign a £15m bench warmer on stupid wages. If we sign another striker then great, but they have to be better than what we have already.

Confused by this?
Billy Sharp has a squad number for the season, so is he still on the books until that club is found?
Keep on this story, Echo, as this is one Saint that we would like to see succeed (here or) elsewhere. He'll do a job too.
I think he could still be utilised here, too, if his contract has not been terminated.
The very best of Luck to Billy Sharp.
